Dig in or Don't Bother

When I came across the above quote, service and leadership immediately came to mind. We all can certainly think of individuals who: 1) we can count on to get the job done, 2) are more focused on themselves than the good of the group, and 3) contribute little to nothing to the task at hand. Which type of individual do you aspire to be? If you are ready to "roll up your sleeves" and get to work — NAGC needs YOU!

Searching for Outstanding Graduate Students

Do you know an outstanding student working towards a Specialist's or Master's degree in gifted education? The NAGC Master’s and Specialist's Award for Exceptional Contributions to Gifted and Talented Education honors up to three of these students. In addition to the recognition of their peers, the winners each receive $200 and a complimentary one-year NAGC membership. The awards committee looks for candidates who have done at least four of the following: teaching, writing, advocacy, curriculum development, community service in gifted education, juried presentations, facilitating the social/emotional development of gifted students, mentoring/tutoring, publication of a paper in juried or non-juried publications, participation in graduate student research colloquia, or teacher in-service or parent workshops. State Leaders Convene in March
The 22nd Annual State Affiliate Conference kicks off on March 22 in Arlington, VA. The event brings together leaders from state gifted education organizations for learning from experts in the field of gifted, advocacy, policy, and association management. We hear in evaluations each year that the best learning comes from their time together, dissecting issues and sharing successes. The Conference culminates with visits to Capitol Hill on Tuesday to voice concerns with Senate and House offices. With the co-location of the NAGC State Affiliate Conference and the Wallace Symposium this year, state leaders will join Symposium sessions on Monday. NAGC and the University of Iowa/Belin-Blank Center have collaborated to bring the Wallace Research & Policy Symposium on Talent Development to Washington D.C., March 22-25. This premiere biennial conference addresses the latest research findings and policy implications for gifted education and talent development. The Wallace Symposium is especially practitioner-friendly this year, with workshops and strategies for applying research in your classroom offered on Monday. Read about the presentations. Young Scholars Program Deadline is March 20

Do you know a high-performing 7th grader? Do they have financial need? If so, please encourage them to apply for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Program, which provides an on-staff adviser and services, which may include help planning a suitable academic course load, summer enrichment programs, study-abroad and community service opportunities, and college and career counseling. The application is now open and will close March 20.

ACT Cites 'New STEM Gap': Interest v. Intention

A report claims there's a "new STEM gap": The disconnect between those students who say they plan to pursue STEM careers and those who demonstrate a genuine interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The ACT study looks at the "expressed and measured interests" of the 1.8 million high school graduates from the class of 2013 who took the ACT college-readiness assessment.
