Get Active this Spring

As you prepare for spring and clear out the old and prepare for the new, please consider "springing forward" to become a more active participant in NAGC. It is only through involved members that NAGC can fulfill the mission of addressing the needs of gifted and talented children. There are many areas where your participation in the work of the Association is both welcomed and needed. Here are five ways, both small and large, that YOU can become more involved in NAGC.

Honor Exceptional Teachers

Classroom teachers are essential to the success of gifted students. NAGC has two awards to honor exceptional gifted teachers.
  • The Master's and Specialist Award is for individuals who have demonstrated at least four of the following: teaching; writing; advocacy; curriculum development; community service in gifted education; juried presentations (local, state, or national); facilitating the social and emotional development of gifted and talented students; mentoring/tutoring of children and adolescents; publication of papers in juried and/or non-juried publications; participation in graduate student research colloquia; teacher in-service/parent workshop. Do any of the outstanding teachers in your school or district qualify? Winners receive a plaque and check for $200, our appreciation at the Celebration of Excellence at the NAGC Convention and a one-year membership in NAGC.
  • Up to two A. Harry Passow Scholarships are awarded each year to K-12 teachers who excel at teaching gifted children and have shown a commitment to furthering their own teaching skills. The $2,000 scholarship goes to defray the cost of their continuing education. The award was named to honor A. Harry Passow, who was an educator and an early researcher who studied the needs of gifted children. He was a strong advocate for the needs of high-ability students living in poverty to have equal access to services and coursework.
It is easy to show someone how much you appreciate their efforts. Begin the online submission process today. The deadline for completing your nomination is May 4.

Connecting for High Potential New Look — Great Content
NAGC is pleased to announce the redesign of one of NAGCs parent-teacher pubs, Connecting for High Potential (CHP). This new design debuts with Issue 26, "The Technological Revolution," now online.

Since the launch in 2005, Connecting for High Potential (CHP) design and content was meant to be "tear and share." Since the redesign of the new NAGC website, PDFs of CHP are accessible as a "members-only" publication, but we encourage both teacher and parent members to print it out and share widely. Log in to view the PDF. Remember your user name to log in is always your email address and you create your own password (if you have not yet done so, use "gifted1").

Communicating in One Voice: Your State Affiliate

Each year around this time I have the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., where NAGC's national office is located, and take part in a variety of meetings and activities related to "Super Weekend." At this event close to 50 state association leaders will discuss the importance of gifted education programming, plan Capitol Hill visits, construct common messages and share what works in their state. Over the course of four days, your state leaders will hear from a variety of speakers, seek to increase their understanding of the important issues currently on the table, speak directly with United States senators and congressmen and their staff and come away from the experience with resources, ideas, direction, and a renewed awareness of what needs to be achieved.

Gifted Education Advocates Praise Leadership of Outgoing Senator

U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski, a Democrat from Maryland who plans to retire in 2016 after 30 years in Congress, has been a dogged supporter of programs intended to identify and educate underrepresented populations in gifted education, advocates said. Thanks to Mikulski's work, the federal government restored funding to the $10 million Jacob K. Javits grant program after three years of its absence from the U.S. Department of Education's budget, said Jane Clarenbach, the director of public education for NAGC.

Research: Active Learning More Important Than Flipping the Classroom

Active learning produces the same student learning outcomes in both flipped and nonflipped classrooms, according to new research from Brigham Young University. In the flipped classroom model, students watch video lectures outside of class time and participate in active learning activities during class time. The approach has been growing in popularity, so researchers at BYU decided to test its effectiveness.

How to Make Elementary Teachers Stronger in STEM

Despite renewed interest, calls for funding and presidential appeals, true STEM integration is missing from a large number of classrooms across the country. And to hear Patty Born-Selly tell it that's especially true at the elementary level. "Most elementary teachers when they are placed in the classroom often just don't feel comfortable teaching STEM subjects," said Born-Selly, who is the executive director of the National Center for STEM Elementary Education, an organization embedded within Minnesota's St. Catherine's University, colloquially known as St. Kate's.
