Research and Practice: A Balanced Scale in Gifted Education

In gifted education, like any applied field, a "pull and tug" tendency always seems to exist between the emphases on research versus practice. The membership of NAGC is very diverse, consisting of parents, researchers, teachers and school administrators. And, because of our specific roles, we tend to be focused primarily on either research or practice. What binds us together is our common interest in the education and talent development of gifted learners in any setting. But, I would suggest that research also connects us to one another and serves all our interests. Research informs our policy development, is the basis for our practice with students, and guides our advocacy on behalf of gifted learners.

Here are some of examples of recent research that I believe have been most influential for the field.

Capital Update
New Assistant Secretary for K-12 Education has Gifted Ed Experience

Deb Delisle was confirmed by the Senate in late April as Assistant Secretary of Elementary & Secondary Education at the U.S. Department of Education. Most recently, Ms. Delisle was the Ohio Superintendent of Public Instruction, but she is also a past local schools superintendent, an elementary school teacher, and a gifted education coordinator in two school districts in Ohio. She may be on the job within the next few weeks. The Assistant Secretary position oversees K-12 programs and grants at the Department and typically spends much time traveling the country, acting as the Secretary's eyes and ears on K-12 education. NAGC looks forward to the meeting with Ms. Delisle to discuss a range of issues, including securing more federal support for gifted learners.

NAGC Op-ed Urges Coordinated Action to Support Gifted Students

NAGC president Paula Olszewski-Kubilius's op-ed calling for a renewed commitment to the talent development strategies that helped the U.S. win the space race was published in the May 3 issue of The Hill, a Washington newspaper widely read by Members of Congress and their staff and others who do business on Capitol Hill. This op-ed and other media messages and letters to the editor are grouped together on the Advocacy in the News page of the NAGC website.

If you were a SPARKLE kid, Felice Kaufmann is looking for you. In 1973, Norwich was among the first school systems in Illinois to launch a program for gifted and talented elementary school students. IQ tests, interviews and recommendations from teachers brought 70 kids from all city elementary schools and all economic and social backgrounds in grades 3-6 into an innovative program at the William A. Emerging research on the "neurodevelopmental paradox" of twice-exceptional students highlights the need for educators to take an earlier, more holistic approach to evaluating and teaching students with disabilities. Often, when people think of a gifted student with disabilities, they picture an autistic savant, like Dustin Hoffman's character in the movie "Rain Man," but in reality, "there are a lot of kids who are really struggling, and we totally miss them," said M.
