Summer Assignment: Contact Congress

It has been 14 years since the most recent passage of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), known as No Child Left Behind, with all its negative consequences for advanced students. In major news last week, the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives each passed a new version of ESEA and gifted education advocates have reason to be excited. Make plans to communicate soon with your members of Congress.

New NAGC Board Members

The members of the National Association for Gifted Children recently elected / re-elected four members for the NAGC Board of Directors. NAGC thanks all the candidates who ran for the Board. The following individuals will begin their service to the Board on Sept. 1:
  • Sally Krisel, President-Elect (term ends: Aug. 31, 2017)
  • Joy Lawson Davis, At-large Member (term ends: Aug. 31, 2018)
  • Brian Housand, At-large Member (term ends: Aug. 31, 2018)

Make a Plan for Pre-Convention Learning
More than 1,000 visitors have reviewed the sessions and speakers on the NAGC Convention itinerary planner. You may search by topic, title or find a colleague or speaker. When you save your plan, you'll have access to the information when the NAGC Convention app goes live in the fall.

While you're online, check out the numerous opportunities that allow you to extend your time in the Arizona sunshine while you enhance your learning. Pre-convention learning begins on Wednesday, Nov. 11, with "Gifted Education Workshops for Teachers." On Thursday, you can choose from Offsite Educational Programs, "Identifying and Serving Gifted and Talented Native American Students: Future Directions for Research, Partnerships, and Practices," or "Using the Teacher Preparation Standards in Gifted Education: Demonstrating Candidate Mastery."

Pre-Convention registration is now open, as is the NAGC Convention registration. Teams of educators in groups of 10 or more receive 10 percent off of registration.

Hats Off to Parents, Grandparents, Caregivers and Teachers!

This week we celebrate National Parenting Gifted Children Week, a special time designated by the National Special Events Registry to raise awareness and increase advocacy for gifted children. It's also an important time for the gifted community to pause and recognize how important all adults — parents, grandparent, caregivers, teachers ("honorary parents") are in the lives of gifted children. The Impact of Javits-Frasier from the First of Three Perspectives

The Javits-Frasier scholarship experience was eye opening for me. Although I am Hispanic, born and raised in Miami-Dade County, and identified as gifted myself, I didn't realize diversity was an issue in gifted education because I always had caring teachers and administrators who looked out for me, and parents who were actively involved in my schooling.

NAGC will launch the fall series of the popular Webinars on Wednesday in September. The six webinars are free to NAGC members (nonmembers: $29 each). You can find more information online now and registration will open soon.

Each session will air live (NOTE: One "Webinar on Wednesday" is on Thursday!) with audience interaction encouraged. Following the event, those registered will also be available to view slides and listen to audio via the link in the "My Webinars" section of your member record.

Senate Approves a Bill to Revamp 'No Child Left Behind'
The New York Times
For the first time in 14 years, the Senate has approved a revised version of No Child Left Behind, the signature Bush-era education law that ushered in an era of broadly reviled, high-stakes standardized testing. But the passage of the bill on a vote of 81-17, coming just a week after the House narrowly passed its own version, sets up a showdown between the two chambers, and leaves the fate of a final measure in doubt.

Serving Gifted Students in General Education Classrooms
Gifted students who are served in general education classrooms frequently finish their work sooner than other students. This can happen in one subject area, such as mathematics or in all subject areas. Due to their rapidity of thought, they typically finish assignments before other children. What is really going on is a mismatch between the academic needs of the student and the pace and depth of the curricula and instructional program.

How Teaching Symmetry Improves Math Understanding
There's a part of the brain that enables us to perceive magnitude — we can compare loudness when hearing different tones or compare the number of dots in a group at a glance. Neuroscientists have identified this region responsible for perceptual comparison (the intraparietal sulcus) as linked to symbolic comparisons, including integers in math. That discovery led scientists to realize that symmetry plays a big role in how humans compare integers.

Texas Boy with IQ of 148 is Young, Gifted and Trying to Be a Kid
NBC News
Meet 11-year-old Jaxon Cota, who just might be smarter than you. Jaxon, of McKinney, Texas, has an IQ score of 148, was admitted to MENSA at age 9, and does high school level math for entertainment when he gets bored during the long days of summer. By 2, he was already reading aloud numbers up to fifteen digits long.

Social-Emotional Skills on the Rise

If you've felt like the term "social-emotional learning" is gaining more buzz among educators recently, you wouldn't be wrong, according to a new study for Education Week. The study, which was released by the publication's research arm, found a steady increase in the number of educators who said social-emotional learning is very important to student achievement.
