New NAA study examines newspaper advertising benchmarks

Senate defeats repeal of burdensome 1099 reporting provision
Despite wide support from the business community, the U.S. Senate rejected an amendment to a small business lending and tax incentive bill that would have removed the new Form 1099 information reporting rules used as a revenue raiser for the health care reform legislation. NAA joined more than 550 groups across the country calling for repeal of the Form 1099 reporting requirement that would impose a major paperwork burden on many businesses, especially those using independent contractors. NAA is working with key senators on the repeal of the Form 1099 reporting requirement. MORE

Tough economic times have ignited a desire among shoppers to save more at the grocery store. A recent study indicated that 89 percent of Americans regularly used coupons when shopping for groceries. More than 164 billion coupons were offered by retailers in the first half of 2010. In 2009, 311 billion coupons were distributed. In fact, nearly $3 billion was saved using coupons last year alone. August online sales up by 15 percent

The coolest August for 17 years helped push online sales for the month up by 15 percent, compared to last year, according to the latest IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index. That helped push e-commerce sales in the year to date to a 15 percent jump, higher than the 13 percent previously predicted. More

Mobile apps advertising will rocket to more than $8 billion in five years, according to a recent Borrell Associates forecast. Part of this comes from the growth in receiving mobile ad messaging across a broader range of electronic devices, according to the Williamsburg, Va.-based media researcher. More

Journal Register Co. said it is expanding its advertising partnership with Yahoo to include Philadelphia, the nation's fourth-largest DMA. The move is part of the publisher's Digital First growth initiative. The company will leverage Yahoo's behavioral and geographical ad targeting system on its websites and on Yahoo network pages to deliver targeted messages. More

Daily Richmond News reducing its print frequency

The Richmond (Mo.) News is reducing its frequency in print from daily to twice weekly. The paper announced it "will follow a small-market newspaper trend" by cutting back on its number of print editions beginning Oct. 18. Starting on that date, the 96-year-old News will be published on Monday and Thursday afternoons, with mail delivery to follow on Tuesdays and Fridays. More
