CDC defends school guidelines as advocates say they make it too hard to reopen
The Washington Post
For months, President Joe Biden has been urging schools to reopen, and promised that guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would help them do so safely. At the same time, public health experts including some at the CDC said available evidence suggested schools could safely open as long as precautions were in place. That raised expectations that the nation's K-12 education system might accelerate its return to in-person learning.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb announces results of increased school bus safety patrols
WBND
In coordination with local bus drivers and school transportation officials, 2,481 additional safety patrols were conducted funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that issued a total of 1,553 warnings and 1,701 citations. These extra patrols were funded through the state’s Stop Arm Violation Enforcement program, being developed by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute in 2019 to provide safe transportation routes for Hoosier students.

More students returning to school means more kids on school buses
Newsday
Long Island school buses are filling up again to start 2021, as more kids gradually return for in-person instruction. School bus operators said they've seen a steady increase of passengers, as infection rates for the coronavirus have fallen in recent weeks and school boards are approving more in-person learning days. "We're moving more children now than we were," said John Corrado, president of Suffolk Transportation Service, which buses students in 19 Suffolk school districts.

Will the House put the brakes on the electric school bus bill again?
The Virginia Mercury
For the second year running, Senate legislation that would expand an electric school bus program being piloted by Dominion Energy is losing momentum in the House of Delegates. The bill was abruptly put on hold for the day Tuesday as it came up for a final vote in the House after passing the Senate earlier this month. Small groups of Republicans have consistently opposed the school bus electrification proposals.

Biden says he wants most K-8 schools open 5 days a week by his first 100 days
NPR
At a CNN town hall, President Joe Biden said his goal is to open the majority of K-8 schools by the end of his first 100 days in office. Asked to clarify what he meant by "open," Biden said "I think many of them five days a week. The goal will be five days a week" in person. He said he would focus on K-8 schools because they're the "easiest to open" due to the relatively low transmission rate of the coronavirus between children.

Columbus still can't find transportation for middle and high school students
WOSU
Faced with a governor who appears intent on holding school districts to a coronavirus vaccine agreement, Columbus City School leaders appear just as set on not being able to live up to the deal. Gov. Mike DeWine this week specifically addressed the state's largest district, which has so far only brought elementary students back into physical classrooms, but not most middle and high school students.

Do leaders need to change their plans to address the new COVID-19 strains?
The Lead Change Group
Should leaders pivot their plans due to the possible impact of the new COVID strains - coming from the U.K., South Africa, and elsewhere, and discovered across the U.S. - on their businesses? The authorities, various experts, as well as media have put the spotlight on concerns over vaccine effectiveness and said the strains are likely not going to escape the vaccine. They thus assert there's no need to ring the alarm.

Stop softening tough feedback
Harvard Business Review
As a manager, you've likely served a subordinate a "feedback sandwich": two pieces of positive reinforcement wrapped around a thick slice of criticism. It makes correcting people easier for you, but it rarely achieves the goal of helping someone improve. For people with strong egos, the criticism goes down too easily, while highly self-critical employees can choke on it. Others can find the mixed messages merely confusing. Our work with hundreds of business leaders, executive coaches and sports coaches reveals that the best managers give feedback differently: They focus squarely on what needs to change.

3 qualities of leaders who succeed during uncertain times
Entrepreneur
Before the COVID-19 pandemic upended the world, businesses were already becoming more accustomed to dealing with uncertainty. The geopolitical landscape was as tumultuous as it had been in many years, rocked by an erratic U.S. administration and Brexit-induced volatility, and digital disruption was condemning a growing number of longstanding incumbents in numerous sectors to the graveyard, having failed to evolve.
