The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The virtual teacher has arrived — flickering away on a screen on a school bus, in a bunk bed or in the shade of a beach umbrella, and turning traditional education on its head. Thanks to digital media like video-on-demand broadcasts, or VODcasts, lectures that students would normally receive in the classroom are migrating outside of brick and mortar schools. More

States consider raising fines for distracted driving
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Growing concern over the continued use of cellphones by drivers has some states reviewing laws against the practice and exploring stiffer fines and harsher penalties. A 2010 study by the Highway Loss Data Institute, an affiliate of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, found that current texting bans are not reducing the risk or amount of crashes. But some question whether tougher punishment is the answer. More

The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The concept of electric bicycles, whose riders can cruise up hills on battery power when they are tired of pedaling, is slowly catching on in cities around the world. The bicycles resemble their conventional counterparts but have a heavier frame and carry a battery pack, which is usually either behind the rider or integrated in the frame. The motor transmits energy to the rear wheel, and the battery can be detached for recharging. More

Airlines experiment with do-it-yourself boarding
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Could boarding the aircraft become the next automated "do-it-yourself" part of the air-travel experience? Delta has become the latest U.S. carrier to consider a "self-boarding" concept, testing the option in Atlanta and Las Vegas. In theory, self-boarding would free airline gate agents from collecting boarding passes and instead let them focus on customers needing in-person help. More
