NAPT election announcement
During NAPT's Annual Summit this November, elections will be held for directors of Region 2 and Region 4. These positions are currently held by Barry Sudduth, CDPT (Region 2 — Stafford County Public Schools, Virginia) and Kenny Mulder, CDPT (Region 4 — Special School District, Missouri). To see what states each Region covers, click here.
Pursuant to the Article IV, Section 4.21 of the NAPT By-laws: "Any person who wishes to be a candidate for...regional director must be an active individual member as defined in Section 2.11 (1) and have completed two years as a member in good standing before he/she becomes eligible to run for the Board of Directors."
Barry Sudduth, CDPT Nominated for Re-Election
- Anyone interested in running for one of these positions must be nominated by a minimum of two active individual members from their particular Region of the association.
- Regional directors are selected by vote of only those active members whose mailing address is within that specific region.
Current Board member, Barry Sudduth, CDPT, Director of Transportation for Stafford County Public Schools (VA) has been nominated for re-election to the Region 2 Director position. Sudduth was nominated by Cheryl Fisher, Director of Transportation for Fauquier County Public Schools (VA); the nomination was seconded by Justin Sarver, Director of Transportation for Orange County Public Schools (VA).
Election Dates & Deadlines
ABSENTEE BALLOT REQUESTS — Any NAPT member seeking to vote by absentee ballot must send a written request for a ballot to NAPT headquarters. All requests must be received no later than the close of business on Friday, Sept. 26.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS MAILED TO VOTERS — Official absentee ballots will be mailed to all eligible voters no later than Friday, Oct. 10.
ABSENTEE BALLOT RETURN — All absentee ballots must be received at NAPT headquarters no later than Friday, Oct. 31.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 11. Elections will be held in Kansas City, MO on the Trade Show floor from 10am — 12pm.

NAPT recertification reminder
Exciting news for those NAPT Certified members that earned the Director, Supervisor and Specialist certifications prior to 2011; your recertification deadline has been extended to December 31, 2015. Click here for the Recertification Packet.
In order to recertify, you must maintain a continuous annual NAPT membership as well as achieve a minimum number of points as follows:
The points must be accrued and submitted along with recertification form and a payment of $25.
- Specialists must accumulate 10 points in the last 3 years
- Supervisors must accumulate 20 points in the last 3 years
- Directors must accumulate 30 points in the last 3 years
Members with certification dates in 2012 through today are required to submit recertification requirements every three years following certification. For example, a 2012 certification date means a 2015 recertification date. Natrona County, Wyo., transit costs per student are below state average
Though the Natrona County School District is seeking to cut travel costs with its new school bus hub in downtown Casper, Wyoming, a Star-Tribune analysis of state transportation data suggests the district's costs are close to those of another district that has used the hub concept for 30 years. The analysis also suggests Natrona County is transporting students more cost-efficiently than in Cheyenne, where students attend neighborhood schools.

Building a good idea, like building a good structure, takes time, talent, and contributions from various fields of knowledge and expertise. Let's take a skyscraper for example. The work requires funding, understanding of purpose, and a vision for design. It will involve architects, lawyers, steelworkers, electricians, plumbers, perhaps stone workers, drywall installers, interior designers ... and a whole lot more. The plans need to be clear and detailed, informed by expertise and understanding of the project, its limitations, its strengths and its possibilities. After all, we want a skyscraper that does not fall down.
Impatient drivers, school bus cameras have eye on you

Macomb County, Michigan, drivers should be extra careful maneuvering around school buses, especially in two school districts. They are testing out cameras that can catch impatient drivers who illegally pass school buses that stop to pick up and drop off children. For years the Macomb County Sheriff's Office has partnered with districts to help identify such motorists. But in a demonstration they had — during an event designed to raise awareness of school bus safety — they highlighted the technology that will allow them to have photographic evidence of violators.
Be safe around school buses
For many students, the new school year means riding a school bus in the morning and afternoon. And for many parents, administrators, bus drivers and motorists, that means taking extra care to ensure safety is observed inside and outside the school bus. PennDOT recorded 46,085 licensed school bus drivers operating 31,268 registered school buses in 2013. There were 1,535,957 students being transported on a daily basis. Safety is paramount.
Trying to stretch money for athletic travel can leave some schools road-weary
After the athletic department at Colonial looked for ways to save on travel expenses, Jennifer Cooper became one of the girls. It was just Cooper, her twin daughters and their friends, talking about whatever came to mind as they went to and from the Grenadiers' cross country practices and meets a couple of years ago. Cooper was always behind the wheel of her sport utility vehicle, connecting with daughters Emily and Catherine Perkinson while adhering to the rules of the road. Not even the stain on the SUV's floor, caused by a five-gallon bucket of Gatorade that spilled, could dampen the mood.
Promoting positive parent-teacher communication

Ask teachers what they wish they had more time to dedicate to in their job, and better communication with parents will almost always be at the top of their list. The reality is that teachers want parents to be informed. But once the school year gets going, parent communication often takes a back seat. Teachers quickly fall into the habit of calling home only when they have bad news to report, and that makes for an unhealthy relationship between parents and teachers.
School bus inspection reports soon to be done electronically

When inspectors from the commercial vehicle enforcement division of the Michigan State Police start the new cycle of inspections, reports will be completed electronically. As inspectors check more than 17,000 vehicles, which transport more than 800,000 students, they will place a sticker with a QR code in the window.

Study: Cyberbullying increases as students age

As students' age they are verbally and physically bullied less but cyberbullied more, non-native English speakers are not bullied more often than native English speakers and bullying increases as students' transition from elementary to middle school. Those are among the findings of a wide-ranging paper just released.
Buses may be coming for West New York children with long walks to school
The Jersey Journal
West New York Mayor Felix Roque has put together a plan to bus the children left with a long walk to a temporary school while renovations are being done at their original school. "It's a gracious offer," town superintendent of schools John Fauta said of the letter he received from Roque yesterday. In that letter, the mayor offered town funds to pay for buses for Harry L. Bain School students who now attend school at the St. Joseph of the Palisades Elementary School building, located at 54th Street and Broadway.

Chronically late school bus prompts SFUSD to adjust pickup times

Students at Rooftop Elementary School in California were accompanied by an unusual presence on one of the school's two morning buses this month: their principal. On Sept. 4, principal Jeff Slater-Cote rode bus No. 612 along the 2A route — which picks up children from four stops in the Bayview — to investigate the vehicle's chronic tardiness since the beginning of the school year Aug. 18. The bus reportedly arrived at school 25 minutes late, at 8:15 a.m., the day Slater-Cote rode it.
