Wi-Fi buses were a quick solution for student internet access, but as schools reopen they need their buses back
The Texas Tribune
The sight became familiar across Texas after the coronavirus pandemic abruptly closed schools last spring — empty school buses rigged with Wi-Fi routers sat in parking lots and neighborhoods, allowing students to tap into free internet to do their schoolwork. But with more students returning to in-person classes, some school districts now need to get those buses back on the road while still figuring out how to provide internet access to families needing it.

Connecticut requires districts to keep logs of school bus cleanliness. Some are not.
Connecticut Post
Some area school districts are not keeping track of when school buses are sanitized as required by the state, a CT Insider investigation has found. Most schools districts have reopened with an option for in-person learning — either part-time or full-time — and school transportation can be a hotspot for spreading coronavirus if not handled carefully.

Federal per-pupil spending map gives rundown for each school and district
THE Journal
The United States Department of Education has launched an interactive map that shows how much money each school spends per student. So far, districts and schools in 20 states have been added to the map. The idea, according to the agency, is to "radically increase transparency as parents and local leaders seek to understand funding levels and differences between schools." ESSA, the Every Student Succeeds Act, requires each state to provide the data on "per pupil expenditures" as part of its public "report card" for each education agency.

NYC schools watchdog ignored bus driver safety issues, lawsuit alleges
New York Post
The city schools watchdog quashed investigations into alleged corruption at the Office of Pupil Transportation — then canned the whistleblower who sounded the school bus alarm, according to a lawsuit. Alexandra Robinson, who was fired as OPT executive director in October 2019, says she for years flagged suspected violations by companies who train and certify school bus drivers, only to see the Special Commissioner of Investigation quickly nix at least four probes.

How to overcome the distraction of compassion
Leadership Freak
Distracted leaders are octopods spinning like tornados with sucker-filled tentacles clinging to "important" trivialities. You can't go eight directions at the same time and make meaningful progress. The centrifugal force of distraction drives leaders toward triviality, anxiety and burnout.

5 strategies to support your employees through a crisis
Harvard Business Review
The COVID-19 pandemic has separated people from their workplaces, coworkers and familiar daily routines. In many cases, it has added stress, led to a drop in morale and fragmented team cohesion — all of which can result in dampened work performance. That's why actively fostering a sense of inclusion at work is so critical right now.

Clear as muck: When the only thing that's certain is more uncertainty
By Linda Popky (commentary)
As we get to the end of what’s been a long and challenging year for most of the world, we can all look forward to … who knows? We are just under a month away from a presidential election that may or may not have a clear winner on election night. We’re expecting an effective vaccine to protect us from the virus in the next month or two — or maybe the next year, or maybe not at all. Virtually none of this is clear. Yet, we need to continue to move forward, run our businesses, support our customers, and take care of our families. How do you maintain a sense of balance when nothing is certain? Here are a few suggestions.

Why 'returning to normal' isn't the highest path for our schools
District Administration Magazine
As schools reopen, which looks different from community to community, educators, students and parents are grappling with the realities of how to "do school" during a pandemic. There's an understandable desire to return to normal. Unfortunately, "normal" education wasn't working very well for all students even before the pandemic struck — particularly for Black and Brown students. Educators, students and families have known this for a long time.

The practice that expands leadership every time
Leadership Freak (commentary)
"Can you feel good about focusing on yourself? I can. I think, 'How fascinating,' when I think about myself, but when my mind turns to others, I think, 'They need to improve.' I need to remind myself that you could be right. But I don't need any reminders to notice when you're wrong."

Survey: What leaders must do to adapt and succeed in 2021
Inc.
In the past six months, tens of millions of Americans have lost their jobs because of the pandemic, and a large portion are still unemployed. For those who still have jobs, most companies have successfully made the transition to remote-first work. That begs the question: What does this mean for company culture and employee engagement?
