7 ways technology is making school buses safer
District Administration Magazine
Today wraps up National School Bus Safety Week, which encourages parents, students, teachers, motorists, school bus operators, school administrators and the public to promote the importance of school bus safety. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, school buses are the safest form of transportation to and from school. School buses meet 48 federal safety standards — more than any vehicle on the road. In addition, riding a school bus is 70 times safer than riding in a passenger vehicle and 10 times safer than walking to school.

Politics, not science, is driving school reopening decisions to a 'really dangerous' degree, research suggests
The 74
Over seven months after much of society shut down in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is no uniform policy guiding school districts through the return of tens of millions of students to in-person education. In most jurisdictions, officials have spent the last few months balancing risks and responsibilities, resulting in millions of American students returning to the classroom even as millions of their peers still spend their days in front of a screen.

America's school funding crisis: Budget cuts, rising costs and no help in sight
NPR
Back in May, school funding experts predicted a looming financial disaster for the nation's K-12 schools. "I think we're about to see a school funding crisis unlike anything we have ever seen in modern history," warned Rebecca Sibilia, the founder of EdBuild, a school finance advocacy organization. "We are looking at devastation that we could not have imagined ... a year ago." But those warnings, like everything else that happened in May, feel like a lifetime ago. Where do things stand now?

The value of setting a clear school vision this year
Edutopia
Leading during Covid-19 is hard. We have categorically changed the way we've done school, and we are putting out new fires daily while traversing not only a global pandemic but a reckoning surrounding racism and polarized politics. None of that is easy. In challenging circumstances, building and district leaders often tend toward cheerleading — a commendable and appropriate response. But we cannot lose sight of the entirety of that word: The leading matters as much as the cheering.

What the research says about school reopening and COVID-19 transmission
MindShift
Despite widespread concerns, two new international studies show no consistent relationship between in-person K-12 schooling and the spread of the coronavirus. And a third study from the United States shows no elevated risk to childcare workers who stayed on the job. Combined with anecdotal reports from a number of U.S. states where schools are open, as well as a crowdsourced dashboard of around 2,000 U.S. schools, some medical experts are saying it's time to shift the discussion from the risks of opening K-12 schools to the risks of keeping them closed.

How will the 2020 Biden-Trump election impact K-12?
District Administration Magazine
The homework gap and connecting all students to the internet will remain one of the key K-12 challenges facing either Don Trump's or Joe Biden's administration after the 2020 election. The second HEROES Act provides $12 billion for Internet access, hotspots and computing devices. This would cover the current emergency, but a more permanent solution is needed to close the homework gap, says Jon Bernstein, an education, technology and communications lobbyist who is president of the Bernstein Strategy Group.

Are millions of students really missing school?
District Administration Magazine
As many as 3 million of the country's most marginalized students may not have returned to school — online or in-person — since the COVID closures in March, a new analysis suggests. English language learners, homeless and disabled students, and children in foster care are among the groups that have had the most trouble accessing school since the pandemic began, according to the "Missing in the Margins" report by Bellwether Education Partners.

3 strategies for authentic decision-making leaders
Forbes
As a leader, you have many crosspoints to consider when making decisions. To guarantee that your associates, peers and others will follow through, you need to be authentic. Authentic leaders take decision-making seriously, even when the stakes seem low. They understand that some small choices can have a big impact on an individual, team or organization. Authentic leaders reflect on what they are trying to accomplish, who will be affected, what consequences may occur and how their decision aligns with their mission and values.

Or don't get to work, as the case may be. Although forecasts and timelines vary, one thing is clear: COVID-19 is here to stay. The rest is largely unknown: particularly regarding decisions made by businesses and individuals.

How 2 school districts are 'electrifying their rides'
District Administration Magazine
Electric buses not only keep pollutants out of the air and save fuel costs, but they can also generate some revenue for a school district. While they may be more expensive to buy than are diesel vehicles, the energy generated by electric bus batteries can be returned to the power grid. That's exactly what the three electric buses do in Concord Public Schools in Massachusetts. The vehicles recharge after afternoon runs and then plug into the local power grid to provide power during peak evening use from about 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
