Hiring reform jeopardized by staffing shortfalls, human resource executives say

In his first year-and-a-half at the Office of Personnel Management, director John Berry has pursued the most aggressive work force reforms human resources officials have seen in years. But a new survey finds chief human capital officers are worried their human resource staffs aren't up to the task. The report, released by the Partnership for Public Service and Grant Thornton, found growing resentment among CHCOs that OPM is dictating vast changes without providing the lower-level support agencies need to implement those changes. More feds are benefiting from student loan repayments

Federal agencies were more generous with student loan repayment benefits in 2009 than in the previous year, according to a report the Office of Personnel Management. From 2008 to 2009, the number of federal employees receiving student loan repayment benefits increased 23 percent. Agencies' overall financial investment in the program also grew. More

Fidelity finds 401(k) savings rise, as do withdrawals and loans

Data from Fidelity Investments for the second quarter of 2010 shows that while investors are saving more in their 401(k) plans, hardship loans and withdrawals are also on the rise. The release of the findings suggests that hard times are far from over regardless of some signs of recovery. While the average 401(k) balance was up 15 percent from last year to $61,800, so too were initiations of loans and hardship withdrawals, Fidelity found. More
