NARFE-PAC makes pre-election push for donations
With elections around the corner, NARFE-PAC's clout shows now more than during any other time of the year. After the elections, another round of budget fights is sure to threaten federal and employee interests once again. Help yourself NOW by giving to NARFE-PAC, "The Federal Employee and Retiree Defense Fund," before it's too late. NARFE extends membership drive through Dec. 31
Based on requests by NARFE members at the Association's National Convention in Orlando, the membership drive originally planned for September only has been extended through the end of the year. NARFE will give members $10 for each new member, current OR retired, who joins between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31. In addition, recruiters will be entered into a drawing for a Kindle Fire tablet, once for each new member recruited. The recruiter's ID number must be on the application to qualify. Applications must be postmarked, and calls or website joins must be received, by the Dec. 31 deadline. For more details, go to, log in and click on the Membership Drive banner on the NARFE home page.

Question: My husband and I are planning to retire and want to know the requirement for adding a spouse to the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program. I have self-only coverage as a federal employee, and my spouse’s coverage under a union plan will end when he retires.

NARFE finds votes impacting feds, retirees 'more polarized than ever'

Vermont and Rhode Island lawmakers were among those in Congress who consistently voted in favor of federal workers and retirees, according to the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association's latest scorecard. NARFE released its analysis one month ahead of November's elections, breaking down how each member of the 113th Congress voted. Out of 535 members of Congress, 207 voted 100 percent of the time in accordance with NARFE on key bills.

CFCs optimistic about topping shutdown-plagued 2013 season

As the 2014 Combined Federal Campaign kicks into high gear, federal employees and campaigns across the country believe they will bounce back from the record-low donations of 2013. Last year, a prolonged government shutdown and extensive furloughs cut donations to the lowest levels in more than 15 years — falling from $258.3 million in 2012 to less than $210 million in 2013. But while campaigns are optimistic they will beat last year's goals, contributions might not reach earlier years.

Little change to retirement backlog in September
The backlog of retirement applications at the Office of Personnel Management stayed relatively flat in September. At the end of August, the backlog stood at 13,097 and it was down to 12,767 at the end of September, a reduction of only 330. However, more claims were processed by OPM than were received: 6,680 claims were processed in September against 6,350 new claims that came in during the month.

What you need to know about the JPMorgan Chase cyberattack
JPMorgan Chase revealed Oct. 2 that it had sustained a cyberattack that compromised the contact information of 76 million households and 7 million small businesses. Experts say that it's a crisis situation for the bank, though it's uncertain what the hackers will do with the stolen data. "It's fresh, it's huge, and it's a target list of people who qualify for Chase accounts," Tod Beardsley, engineering manager at security firm Rapid7, told Mashable in an email.
