From April 17: Michael Stone writes: "When I teach a class or webinar, sometimes I wonder if those listening understand what I'm trying to say. After reading some of the questions that came in during last week's webinar on calculating your markup, I realized I missed the mark. Here are a few of the questions:
- I have no employees, what is my markup?
- What is my minimum markup?
- Does your markup formula work in Canada?
- I am an interior designer, should my markup be 1.50 or do I add a margin for profit?
- I am a roofer, is my markup for a specialty or a remodeling contractor?
Let me say first that all these questions are covered in some depth in the Markup and Profit, Revisited book. However, we went at a fairly good clip in the presentation, so I want to address more on the topic of markup here."

From May 8: We received an interesting question from a contractor:
We have a customer (our local Commonwealth Attorney) who is asking us to do handyman type work for him on a consistent basis. We like to stay in his good graces, especially for referrals. It gets a bit tedious to prepare a contract each time. Is it ever a good idea to have a "service agreement" for the entire year, to review annually, that will cover small jobs under a certain amount? That way we could do his work and invoice him as needed? He is the only customer we have like this. Any thoughts are always appreciated.

Qualified Remodeler
From Sept. 11: In a recent article, I stated that a well-run specialty home improvement company, which sells a single product line such as replacement windows, roofing, siding, or a combination of these or similar products, should target to earn no less than 10 percent pretax net profit.
A general remodeling company should plan to earn no less than 5 percent to 6 percent pretax net profit.

Remodelers Advantage
From Aug. 24: One of the most important aspects of marketing is positioning your company in your space — but many remodelers often overlook this critical component. However, it’s the best way to separate your company from the competition, especially if you’re in a crowded market or competing against entrenched firms.
Wes Powell, co-owner and vice-president of Builder Funnel, says positioning isn’t something you do with your products or services, but instead it happens in the mind of your prospect. Comparing it to the automobile industry, Mercedes-Benz might hold the position of quality, Volkswagen might hold the position of economy, and Toyota might hold the position of reliability, but each one has its unique position in your mind and none of them overlap.

From July 24: This note came in recently from a specialty contractor and I wanted to share it with you. There are always at least two sides to any scenario, but if you want to stay in business, consider it a lesson on how not to treat a subcontractor.
I have a scenario where the contractor is trying to get me to work that was not included in the original scope of work for free and getting hostile when I told him I cannot do that but I am willing to put together a proposal. Then I found out the superintendent of the job was trying to hire my guy behind my back to do this extra work. I was wondering if there was an article you guys have or any advice to handle this. See a lot of stuff regarding s***ty subs not too many on the GC side.

From April 3: Michael Stone writes: “Everyone, and I do mean everyone, who has ever compiled an estimate has made a math error that put knots in their stomach once it was realized. I've been down that path more than once. Until a contract has been signed, you aren't bound by a quote. Admit you made a mistake and revise the price. There's an excellent chance you'll lose the job, and that's why you don't want to make mistakes in the first place."
