Expect this year's natural disasters to influence your work in 2018 and beyond
Heading into 2018, the word of the year could well be “resilience.”
Expect to hear government agencies and construction gurus cite it frequently as America rebuilds from this year’s devastating hurricanes and fires. To code officials, resilience means not just building homes that can better withstand Mother Nature’s fury; it also means creating places that are livable in the days after a disaster, even while the utility lines are out. Codes as stiff as those in Miami — which were credited with doing much to keep Hurricane Irma’s damage relatively minimal there — could become more common elsewhere. Organizations like the International Code Council are using recent natural disasters as motivation for changes in the next few years.

Markup and Profit
For many years we've talked about the importance of having an Operating Capital Reserve Account (O.C.R.A.). I want to talk about it again today because so many business owners don't have one.
An O.C.R.A. is a savings account, or if you prefer, a CYA account. It keeps you out of financial trouble when bad things happen. It eliminates the need for a line of credit, loans against your home, or borrowing from friends, relatives or loan sharks. It stops you from having to sell tools or equipment you need in order to make payroll. It gives you the freedom to walk away from bad jobs. Most importantly, it keeps your family free from financial worries, which helps you sleep better.

How to reduce ice dams, improve thermal performance, and boost durability of homes with vented attics
I have been doing energy audits for about six years now. I enjoy studying the building science and putting it into use to solve problems for customers. The only problem is that the work is typically in the attic or basement, which are two miserable and challenging places to work.
A drawing of a roof/wall ventilation scheme is easy to understand and looks easy to install. On paper, it is.
In practice, it is anything but easy. Lying on rips of plywood across ceiling joists and reaching deep into bird’s mouth cavities fishing around for fibrous insulation — usually pushing against your face, arms, and shoulders, is no picnic. It is often hot and always dusty.

Your colleagues may feel like family, but it's important to remember that you're a business owner first.
Owning a small business presents many challenges: Who are the ideal clients? Who should we never work with? How do we get the service we need from vendors and subcontractors? How do we keep overhead at a manageable amount? When will we make a profit?
One of the biggest challenges is how to manage the company’s relationship with employees. Particularly when the number of employees is small, the tendency is to regard the employees as part of the family. Why does this happen?

Recently I was talking with a group of remodelers about the labor shortage, and one of the people in the discussion made an especially insightful comment. The observation came from Vince Nardo, president of Reborn Cabinets, in Southern California. “In order to be more successful at hiring, I had to change the mindset of our HR department,” Vince said. “They were looking at recruitment from the perspective of a human resources task, but it’s not that anymore; it’s a sales and marketing task.”
The concept made total sense, and my first impulse was to take it at face value. I began thinking about ways to market your company as a great place to work, including writing strategic posts on social media, creating catchy classified ads, and making sure every company benefit was discussed in each job interview.
