Professional Remodeler
Guitar was the instrument of choice in the 1960s, and I started learning to play just before heading off to college. I like the sound, but I also like the feel of the strings under my fingers. It’s the same kind of tactile pleasure I used to get from driving a 16d sinker into a piece of spruce, which I think is one of the feedback loops that kept me interested in carpentry as a vocation. Apparently, I'm not alone in that. In a June 2016 article titled "Solving the Trade Shortage," in Professional Builder, one of our sister publications, contributing editor Scott Sedam describes watching kids at the West Michigan Career Quest driving deck screws for the first time with an extended collated screw gun.

The construction trades have long been one of the industries with the lowest percentage of women in the workforce — as of 2015, fewer than 3 percent of workers in the Construction and Extraction trades were women.
While data on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) workers in the trades is not available, it is clear that many women and LGBTQ workers face bullying and discrimination from sexism, homophobia, and transphobia in the workplace.
Our goal in developing this Toolkit is to offer an array of suggestions and solutions to help small business owners and managers break down gender stereotypes and create companies that are inclusive of all genders and sexual orientations.

U.S. Department of Labor
Every October, the Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration releases a preliminary list of the 10 most frequently cited safety and health violations for the fiscal year, compiled from nearly 32,000 inspections of workplaces by federal OSHA staff. One remarkable thing about the list is that it rarely changes. Year after year, our inspectors see thousands of the same on-the-job hazards, any one of which could result in a fatality or severe injury. More than 4,500 workers are killed on the job every year, and approximately 3 million are injured, despite the fact that by law, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their workers. If all employers simply corrected the top 10 hazards, we are confident the number of deaths, amputations and hospitalizations would drastically decline. Consider this list a starting point for workplace safety.

Solar power accounts for less than one percent of the country's electricity generation, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The industry got off to a slow start. The creation of the first silicon solar cell in 1954 could have ushered in a golden age of clean energy; instead we got more coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
But the U.S. is tapping into the plentiful resource of solar energy more and more.

There has never been a greater need for skill training in the construction industry than there is today. This is not earth-shaking news for most contractors and construction leaders, but it should be noted that this need is, in fact, much greater than in years past and doesn’t appear to be fading away anytime soon.
This article's focus is on skill training. With fewer vocational schools, technical colleges that include construction-based skills (i.e. carpentry, welding, masonry, electrical, etc.,) and even fewer "shop" classes for middle school and high school students, it is even more crucial that contractors train their workers on the skills their company needs.
