During a hurricane, a lot of wind and water damage occurs when soffits blow off the building. Here's a look at why it happens and how to prevent it.
I form part of an industry taskforce developing prescriptive codes for soffits and fascia. We aim to provide the Florida Building Commission with code language that will toughen one of the more common weak points in the building envelope during high-wind events. When soffits blow off, wind-driven rain penetrates the building and damages attic insulation, ceilings, and walls.
After Hurricanes Irma (Sept. 2017) and Michael (Oct. 2018), I toured the ravaged areas observing damage to soffits and fascia, trying to determine what may have caused the materials to fail and how to prevent it. For the most part, the failures resulted from incorrect specification of standard materials in high wind-velocity areas and incorrect material installation.

There are two provisions in most every construction contract that you better understand.
There are two clauses in most every construction contract that could spell trouble—big trouble—if not properly understood and handled. Here is what you need to know about both of them.
Pay-If-Paid
Getting paid is obviously important—so important that you wouldn’t imagine anyone would agree to give up that right. But subcontractors and supply houses do it every day when they sign contracts containing pay-if-paid clauses. With those clauses in place, the prime contractor does not have to pay its subcontractors if it has not been paid. This applies despite the subcontractor’s delivery of materials and performance of contracted work.

The cost of qualified leads is rising steadily, so QR asked readers and experts to tell us what is working. Here are some marketing ideas getting results today.
The market for remodeling and home improvement is strong, so the leads are flowing like water, right? Not necessarily.
It really depends on how much you want to spend on pay-per-click. For example, to bid for the top position for the phrase "window replacement" in the hyper-competitive Dallas MSA, a marketer can expect to pay $25 to get a click. And if a good remodeling or home improvement website converts every 10th visitor, that’s $250 for an inquiry that may potentially become a lead.
A private survey of 200 marketing-savvy home improvement professionals found that their average cost for an appointment was well in excess of $400. Yes, the demand for services is strong, but lead costs for many companies are dramatically eating into profits. Qualified Remodeler asked readers and industry marketing experts to supply ideas that are working now, with the goal of helping remodelers get a grip on marketing costs.

A few small changes in the way you communicate can make a big difference.
"If you say it, they understand it. If you say it well, they feel it." While this is a simple play on words, it's also true. We have seen this from political leaders like John F. Kennedy, spiritual leaders like Gandhi, or media leaders like Oprah.
We also see the power of creative communication with great business leaders, coaches, and gurus that inspire teams to achieve greatness just by conveying the feeling of simple ideas and themes.
So, the question becomes: "How effective are you and your organization at communicating with clients?" Are you wondering why prospects are signing with competitors that you know are not as good as you?

Some of you know that my wife Nina and myself are theater fans. I think attending a good play that is well-performed is an incredible experience. We all thrive on stories. Theater is awonderful way to hear and see them told.
Excellence in live Broadway theater is honored by The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, otherwise known as the Tony Award. This award show happens in June. We are avid viewers of it on TV.
Among the winners this year was Andre De Shields, who won for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. He has won numerous Tony Awards over the decades he has been performing on Broadway.

Covid-19 causes a variety of symptoms, including cough, shortness of breath, and fever. More severe cases can lead to viral pneumonia.
