Remodeling activity is at its highest level since before the housing bubble burst. With mortgage rates and home prices increasing, homeowners are choosing to fix up their current home rather than move up to a more expensive one. At the same time, new home buyers facing limited availability of desirable properties in many markets are following a similar strategy: purchasing a more affordable home that meets their basic needs and then remodeling to transform it into the home they want.

The Remodeling Market Index posted a reading of 53 in the second quarter of 2016. Although it slipped one point from the previous quarter, it is still the 13th consecutive quarter with a reading above 50.
An RMI above 50 indicates that more remodelers report market activity is higher than report it is lower. The overall RMI averages ratings of current remodeling activity with indicators of future remodeling activity.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration says that new regulations to significantly reduce the permissible exposure limits for crystalline silica in construction and general industry will save hundreds of lives and eventually provide net benefits of more than $7 billion annually.
But business groups don’t exactly see it that way. They say it will add an additional layer of cost requirements and project oversight to the construction and manufacturing industries.

Buildings are the largest energy consumer in the nation — accounting for more than 40 percent of the nation’s total energy demand and greenhouse emissions, and resulting in an annual energy bill totaling $430 billion. On average, nearly a third of this energy is wasted. It’s estimated that if the U.S. reduced energy use in buildings by 20 percent, the nation could save nearly $80 billion annually on energy bills.
