Creating an Exit Strategy
August 15, 2019 at 12 pm Central Time
Most contractors are an independent sort—they start their own business, begin small, and then over time grow to a certain success level. But at some point every business owner faces an inevitable (and extremely important) question—How do I leave my business, on my own terms, and in my best financial interests? Creating an Exit Strategy explores the almost-never-mentioned topic of how a construction owner can successfully retire. The two primary exit strategies will be discussed, along with the important questions each owner must answer to make the best decision based on his or her unique needs and wants.
15 Avoidable Ways to Lose Money as a Contractor
August 27, 2019 at 12 pm Central Time
Sometimes, a job goes south because of a devastating weather event, the loss of key personnel due to injury, material or equipment failure, or other circumstances that can wreck profit. But, there are also many habits, practices, and decisions based on misinformation and inaccurate “truisms” that contractors unknowingly engage in. These may have just as devastating impact on your bottom line, but without the accompanying drama. This session looks at common misconceptions, habits and practices that may be robbing you of profit.
Creating and Making Money with a Real Lead Carpenter System
September 10, 2019 at 12 pm Central Time
The lead carpenter system is so far the greatest production method to impact the remodeling industry. Many companies are enjoying the countless advantages this system helps facilitate including higher profits, better customer satisfaction and employee retention. Yet most companies, as well as many carpenters calling themselves lead carpenters, don’t really understand the roles and responsibilities of a “true” lead carpenter. Before you can hire or train employees to implement the system at your company, you must understand what is really expected of the business as well as a Lead Carpenter. Attend this presentation before you make assumptions. You might be surprised at what a real Lead Carpenter System can do for your business and aspiring field employees!

One inevitable effect of technology revolutionizing the remodeling industry is that digital fitness is now a key aspect of overall business health. No “unfit” brand can expect to thrive in a complex, competitive market in the digital age. But how do you know you’re fit enough to compete? In the same way physical fitness is a function of strength, flexibility, balance, speed, mobility and endurance, digital fitness is a product of multiple factors. In this episode of Remodeling Mastery, Mark Richardson uses the analogy of a bike wheel to break down the seven essential “spokes” a business must maintain in order to achieve optimal digital fitness.
As chief of content for one of the nation’s leading construction and remodeling trade publications, Erika has an unequaled vantage point into the hottest trends and issues moving and shaking the home improvement space. Tune in to this Thought Leader Interview, where she and Mark take the pulse of the market and give us a closer look into what today’s homeowner wants and expects from remodelers like yourself.

Victoria and Mark are just back from their own peer group meeting, and were inspired by what they learned. In particular, they were excited by something they heard from another member, Wayne Rivers.
Wayne has a video blog, and we’re picking up one of his episodes about leadership. He says leaders tolerate bad behaviors in their organizations too often, and it can cost you money and time. The culture of any organization is shaped by the worst behavior the leader is willing to tolerate. You may hear some things that hit home for you in his talk.
Wayne is the co-founder and president of The Family Business Institute Inc. He has authored four books on the subject of business families, the latest of which is Our Family Business Crisis and How It Make Us Stronger. Wayne has appeared on the Today Show, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, BusinessWeek: WEEKEND, and on the Retirement Living Network.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced new, tighter standards for lead in dust on floors and window sills to protect children from potentially harmful effects of lead exposure. The announcement comes almost a year after the agency influentially recommended tighter dust-lead hazard standards.
The agency is lowering the dust-lead hazard standards to 10 micrograms of lead per square foot (µg/ft2) from 40 µg/ft2 for floors and to 100 µg/ft2 from 250 µg/ft2 for window sills. The more protective hazard standards will apply to inspections, risk assessments, and abatement activities in pre-1978 housing and certain schools, child care facilities, and hospitals, according to the EPA.

Qualifed Remodeler
I can’t imagine how someone would risk starting and running a remodeling business without knowing how the financial side of things work — knowing whether they will make a profit. Not knowing can put your retirement and your family’s future at risk.
It might be just as foolish as setting out on a road trip to the other coast with duct tape over the gas gauge. Imagine not even checking your gas gauge as you begin your journey. Yet, every day a new remodeler will start a business and do just that. It’s one of the main reasons 85 to 95 percent of all contractors eventually fail in business. Others can keep limping along pretending to be business owners because their wives have a good job with health insurance.
Without the right financial system in place at your business, should you be allowed to call yourself a business owner? I don’t think so. Creating and maintaining an accurate financial system should not be a future goal, it should be something you already have in place. If you are committed to putting a great financial system in place, you should not assume you can do it on your own.

I recently read an article by Danielle Ofri about the "mushrooming workload" that doctors are experiencing.
There are many contributors to the increasing workload, but the biggest one in her opinion is "the electronic medical record, or E.M.R." Dr. Ofri does recognize that there are many good things about the E.M.R and that "no one wants to go back to the old days of chasing down lost charts and deciphering inscrutable handwriting. But the data entry is mind-numbing and voluminous."

Annual gains in remodeling spending are projected to slow significantly by the middle of next year, according to the latest Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity (LIRA) released by the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS) of Harvard University. Recent LIRA releases have suggested a gradual pattern of deceleration; however, the most recent release suggests a dramatic slowdown compared with recent projections. The LIRA projects year-over-year growth in remodeling spending will shrink to 0.4% by the second quarter of 2020, 5.9 percentage points lower than today.
Homeowners are estimated to have spent $322 billion on remodeling in the second quarter of 2020, a 6.8% increase from the year earlier, and are projected to spend $328 billion in the third quarter, marking a 6.3% year-over-year increase. Remodeling spending is expected to decline in nominal terms at the turn of the new year, with the projected $323 billion in spending during the second quarter of 2020 only 0.4% higher than estimated remodeling spending for the second quarter of 2019.

We spend a lot of time going over the basics. Using the correct markup, accurate estimating, making the sale, maintaining relationships.
That's because in the hustle of everyday business, the basics sometimes fall by the wayside. You know it's happened when your net profit starts dropping, but by then you've lost a few months and it'll take a few more months to recover.
We'll discuss one of those basics today when we talk about markup, specifically the difference between new homes and remodeling.

Pro Remodeler
Most estimators use square-foot pricing, whether it’s for a particular phase of construction, like siding or roofing or drywall, or just to get an overall rough price. And why not? Square-foot pricing, a type of unit-pricing, is fast, easy, and reasonably accurate. In fact, if you regularly update estimating software with timesheet data that tracks hours spent on specific phases of construction, you can build a database of historical costs that can produce very accurate pricing.
That said, square-foot pricing can be deceptive because the shape of a space affects the cost to build or remodel it. Taken individually, one square foot may be identical to another, but take two identical square-foot areas and arrange them differently and you may end up with significant differences in the cost to remodel.
