On March 25, 2016 OSHA issued a new rule to better protect workers exposed to respirable crystalline silica on the job. The rule will affect many home remodelers who work with concrete, brick, stone, and other crystalline silica-containing materials. A bomb blast in Iraq left Army Sgt. Brian Beck with severe brain injuries and crippling PTSD.
Then last summer this wounded warrior suffered another blow.
We found Sgt. Beck and his girlfriend, Debra, living in a gutted house with no kitchen and no bathroom. They accuse the contractor they hired, Mike Fabiano, of taking nearly $30,000 and abandoning a remodel job. We called in NARI, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and its President Doug King for help.
Thirty contractors and suppliers from various trades donated their time, talents and materials to remodel the home.

Many people will jump on the internet and search for contractors, but it’s better to start your search by asking neighbors, friends and family — people you trust. During the peak remodeling season, it’s hard not to notice the parade of construction vans and trucks. Stop by and ask your neighbors about their project, its progress, and how it compares with what the contractor promised.
Only after you’ve exhausted this resource should you turn to the internet. And then it should be to contact an industry organization for advice such as the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, which lists providers by specialty.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that it would move ahead in regulations aimed to reduce exposure of formaldehyde vapors from certain wood products. Households with children, parents and grandparents — so-called “sandwich generation” homes — represent 4.3 percent of all households, according to the latest U.S. Census data. Two Florida Supreme Court decisions and a new law have prompted moves to raise workers' compensation rates in the Sunshine State by nearly 20 percent starting Oct. 1. And attorneys appear set to get most of the increase.
The National Council on Compensation Insurance filed the amended rate plan that would push up rates by 19.6 percent, the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation announced July 1.
