Creating an Exit Strategy
August 15, 2019 at 12 pm Central Time
Most contractors are an independent sort—they start their own business, begin small, and then over time grow to a certain success level. But at some point every business owner faces an inevitable (and extremely important) question—How do I leave my business, on my own terms, and in my best financial interests? Creating an Exit Strategy explores the almost-never-mentioned topic of how a construction owner can successfully retire. The two primary exit strategies will be discussed, along with the important questions each owner must answer to make the best decision based on his or her unique needs and wants.

Sometimes, a job goes south because of a devastating weather event, the loss of key personnel due to injury, material or equipment failure, or other circumstances that can wreck profit. But, there are also many habits, practices, and decisions based on misinformation and inaccurate “truisms” that contractors unknowingly engage in. These may have just as devastating impact on your bottom line, but without the accompanying drama. This session looks at common misconceptions, habits and practices that may be robbing you of profit.
Creating and Making Money with a Real Lead Carpenter System
September 10, 2019 at 12 pm Central Time
The lead carpenter system is so far the greatest production method to impact the remodeling industry. Many companies are enjoying the countless advantages this system helps facilitate including higher profits, better customer satisfaction and employee retention. Yet most companies, as well as many carpenters calling themselves lead carpenters, don’t really understand the roles and responsibilities of a “true” lead carpenter. Before you can hire or train employees to implement the system at your company, you must understand what is really expected of the business as well as a Lead Carpenter. Attend this presentation before you make assumptions. You might be surprised at what a real Lead Carpenter System can do for your business and aspiring field employees!

For GCs, the run-up to a recession usually starts with a subtle cooling following a sustained hot market. Many of us are feeling that cooling already. No GC alive has experienced a longer period of economic growth than we are now experiencing. The overwhelming majority of unbiased expert opinion says a downturn will happen within the next 18 months, and while the next recession may be inevitable, its impact on a remodeler can be surprisingly controllable. Do you have a plan? Learn the strategies you need in place at least a year ahead in a free report from the Aspire Institute for Contractors.

I spend a lot of time asking my students to stop trying to persuade their prospects to buy from them. At first, they think I’m joking. They don’t understand the difference between selling and persuasion.
Selling is the activity of qualifying potential buyers that meet specific criteria. A common definition of persuasion is to prevail on a person to do something, as by advising or urging. If persuasion is telling, then selling is asking.

Give your clients good stories and good memories and they'll love you forever.
The relationship between a client and a service provider can be wonderful, of no consequence, or a living hell. At the beginning, it's hard to tell how it will work out in the long run. Mark Up and Profit
In the digital age we live in, people have become attached to their phones. They are viewed as essential item and they absorb a fair amount of people's time. Many remodeling companies opt to provide company cell phones for key employees to allow better communication in the field. In Markup and Profit, consultant Michael Stone argues that the use of cell phones in the field can be a nuisance to a company.
If the phone is used solely to communicate information at the job, Stone says they can be useful and there is no harm done to the company. However, phones can be a distraction, Stone argues, and the constant notifications provide temptations and distract employees from where their focus should be.

And 5 tips for embracing it in your own remodeling business
There has been a lot of buzz over the past couple of years about the importance of being more transparent in the remodeling sales process. There are many points of view on the topic, and the answers aren’t black and white. I share these insights so you can find ways of approaching the subject that work for you.
What Transparency Means
Some interpret transparency as sharing your private business with clients. Others might view it as having to do more work in the estimating and sales process or needing to explain or justify your pricing on the project. Not something that is desirable. However you define it, transparency is where the world is heading.

Remodelers Advantage
It’s a big step, and for many it’s an important milestone. Opening that showroom — with a retail presence, road visibility, product selections, impressive company signs, office space, and warehouse space can be the right strategy for a growing remodeling company.
At the same time, the cost of acquisition, buildout, staffing, and maintenance can be a drain on resources and a distraction from growing a successful company. So, to showroom or not to showroom, that is the question.
