Creating and Making Money with a Real Lead Carpenter System
September 10, 2019 at 12 pm Central Time
The lead carpenter system is so far the greatest production method to impact the remodeling industry. Many companies are enjoying the countless advantages this system helps facilitate including higher profits, better customer satisfaction and employee retention. Yet most companies, as well as many carpenters calling themselves lead carpenters, don’t really understand the roles and responsibilities of a “true” lead carpenter. Before you can hire or train employees to implement the system at your company, you must understand what is really expected of the business as well as a Lead Carpenter. Attend this presentation before you make assumptions. You might be surprised at what a real Lead Carpenter System can do for your business and aspiring field employees!

Remodeling Mastery
Running a remodeling business isn’t easy. In an industry full of challenges and potential missteps, it can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking that struggle is just another fact of life. But what happens when conditions are favorable and everyone else seems to be thriving? How do you explain the struggle then? In this episode of Remodeling Mastery, Mark urges businesses to take a closer look at the common denominators between floundering businesses and what you can do to catapult yourself out of the struggle and into success.
Few remodelers understand the value of transparency quite like Michael, whose company is known for their atypical approach to pricing—one that emphasizes what he calls PHAT: profit, honesty, accuracy and transparency. Now that it’s become such a big buzzword in construction circles, we ask: how can we become more transparent, and are we really going to see returns? Find out in this episode’s Thought Leader Interview. LISTEN NOW
Powertips Unscripted
It’s easy to be successful in a great economy. You can get away with a lot of bad habits, lack of systems and high overhead when jobs are large and margins high. But when the economy contracts, job sizes shrink, and margins erode, those bad habits can have a huge effect on the health of your company.
Focusing on the right things when times are good are key to recession-proofing your business.
In this episode, Dave Edwards talks to Victoria and Mark about the lessons he learned and the changes he made to create a healthy company following the last recession, and how that positions it to survive and even thrive in the next downturn. LISTEN NOW

Remodeling
Design-build firms should right-size the design workload and track the time allocated to each project.
Here is a situation I see sometimes with design-build companies: Production is slow. Why?
The company has a lot of work in design, arguably more than can be handled, so that designers are each working on too many projects at once. Consequently, design and proposal output has slowed to a crawl, making it so construction contracts can't get signed.
How can this situation be handled so that the company is focusing on results, not activities? How can it be resolved so that the company will make the planned-on-profit from the build side of the business, the side that creates virtually all of the profit for the company?

Remodelers Advantage
I love to catch fish. I didn’t say I love to fish. There’s a difference. I love to put fish in the cooler so I can use them for food or bait. True fisherman love the activity of fishing. If they catch some fish, that’s good, but a day fishing with no catch is still a good day. That’s not me.
To get the results I want — more fish in the cooler — I have to better prepare. But I’m terrible at prep for fishing so I don’t get the results I want. My fishing buddy, Brian, actually looks up information on line and reads it. He subscribes to an email chain where people share where they are catching fish and how. He prepares. So guess what? When he’s on board, I catch more fish.
How does this apply to your remodeling business? You have to be honest with yourself, and build your team to fill in where you’re weak.

For Construction Pros
What does the future of the construction industry look like? Significant disruption is almost certain, but so too is opportunity, says Brian Moore of FMI Corporation during a recent webinar hosted by the American Concrete Institute.
Moore points to three trends in particular that will either make or break your construction firm over the next decade: the ongoing labor shortage, growth of megaprojects and the implementation of technology.
“These forces will come together to create significant disruption,” he says.

Qualified Remodeler
Many institutions and businesses in our country have become excellent at being mediocre. It’s a mindset—one the remodeling industry suffers from as well. Whether at a burger joint, a registry of motor vehicles or a lumberyard, we all expect and tolerate poor service because it has become the norm.
If you have the guts to speak up about a mediocre employee or mediocre business responsible for poor service, you may even find yourself being personally attacked. In effect, many business owners and employees seem to be more concerned about protecting or defending their mediocrity than they are about getting away from it.

Chicago Tribune
Old air conditioners that leak refrigerant will become more costly to fix starting in 2020, local heating and air conditioning specialists said.
Effective Jan. 1, the United States will no longer produce or import the refrigerant chemical hydrochlorofluorocarbon 22, often referred to as HCFC-22 or more commonly as R-22. It also is known under the trade name Freon.
For years R-22 had been used around the world in residential and commercial air conditioning, refrigeration, chillers, room air conditioning and transport refrigeration until global leaders decided to phase out its use and production to protect the earth’s ozone layer.
