National Association of the Remodeling Industry
We are a hard working group that doesn't seem to know how to have fun. The results of our 2nd micro-survey are in:
- 40% of us did not take a vacation this summer!
- 30% of those that did take time off only took long weekends
- Half of vacationers did take a trip
- 25% of you reported a dream vacation
So that left most of us at home, working instead of taking the time off! We need to recharge our batteries. Are you satisfied with the time you took off this summer? If you are part of the group that that took a vacation, can you help encourage the rest of us and post some vacation pictures on our Facebook page?
For our 3rd survey, let's look at the time we spend at work.

Last week a group of 16 volunteers met to discuss how NARI can best support recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. The working group is in the process of determining how to best help NARI members in the Houston area who were impacted. NARI Houston is reaching out to assess impact to members and how we can help. The working group will also be identifying how NARI can support the recovery efforts and will meet in September to develop a plan. Updates will be shared along with how NARI members can support the recovery effort.

Judith Miller writes: I asked a client recently what percent of field employees’ time was billable. Without hesitation, he replied, “100 percent.”
He was wrong. Consider all these hours that aren’t related to jobs but must be paid: Safety meetings. Company meetings. Field education. Time in the office for scheduling, vendor quotes, etc. And paid time off.

It is now a tropical storm that is flooding a widespread area.

This week I want to discuss a few topics that often get neglected when we get busy building jobs. These aren't earthshaking topics, but they are the things that cause problems on jobs, leading to disgruntled clients, lost referrals, and lower profit margins.

One of the best things in the world is a large backlog. Peace of mind is hard to find in this business and a healthy backlog makes it easier to sleep at night.
One of the downsides of booking work in advance is prices increasing from the trade contractors and vendors you work with.
A remodeler I know has clients who don’t want to start their project until nine months from now. The project has gone through the remodeler’s design, etc. process. The price is in the six-figure range.
