Recent purchasers of existing homes in particular are opting for open spaces and clean lines, with an emphasis on functionality and easy maintenance. Instead of choosing gourmet kitchens with lots of gleaming gadgets, they are combining materials in interesting ways to create visual appeal.

Demand for residential windows and doors in the U.S. is expected to rise 6 percent a year to reach $25.6 billion by 2020.
That's according to the latest report from market research firm The Freedonia Group, which provides custom research across more than a dozen industries.
The forecast is good news for remodelers who saw steep declines for windows and doors during the housing collapse and economic recession.

But choose the wrong shade and you could wind up regretting it later. On May 18, the U.S. Department of Labor redefined the Fair Labor Standards Act’s overtime threshold. The months leading up to the formal announcement saw stiff opposition from lobbying groups in different industries, including the construction field. Those efforts failed, and the rule goes into effect on Dec. 1.
