NARI
To help NARI leaders fully understand the needs of its members we are starting a new program of quick surveys. These surveys will be quick and easy to answer. We will report the results the following week, along with a follow up question. We encourage your participation and comments. If you have a subject you’d like us to explore please send your comments to the Strategic Planning and Research Committee at SPR@nari.org.
How are you doing is invariably the first question a remodeler is asked in a social setting. Kind of a nosy question isn't it? But we all get asked. Do you give an honest answer? We're busy, we have plenty of work, but do you really ever answer with how you are doing?
All the economic forecasts are predicting continued growth in remodeling activity and that's great news for us, but just being busy does not guarantee business success.
• How you doing financially, are the projects you are doing generating the kind of profit you expect?
• Are you happy; are you able to take time off to spend with your family?
• How else would you measure success?
Here's a gut check question, how are you doing? Only you will know how you answer our 2 question survey, quick and easy. We promise! Your responses will be privileged info, responses are fully anonymous.
This is your chance to unburden yourself with the truth. The resulting information will give you an honest assessment about how you really stack up against your peers. Take our survey now!

Business is good, but the balance sheet is not. Over time, the business’s equity has gone from positive to negative — it owes money to lots of people.
How did it happen? Could be a big hit on a job. Might be poor estimating. Possibly several bad clients. Overhead has not been controlled. And on and on go the reasons.
Once you finally realize how bad the situation is, what can you do? Create a plan, often called a bunker plan, to survive and recover. It’s a plan to get rid of the debt and have positive equity once again.
Here’s what goes into the bunker plan:

This is one way for re-modelers to streamline operations and align expectations — just make sure you provide enough detail
My business partner and I started SoBo Homes in 2003. Today our design-build company has 10 employees and we do 12 to 16 projects per year with a little over $3 million in revenue. We’re a boutique company that provides an intimate experience for our customers.
In 2015 we decided to join Re-modelers Advantage. Our impetus was a retired builder we knew and respected who told us that the single best thing he ever did for his company was to join that group. We were like, “OK then.”

Ten years after a historic building frenzy, remodelers are seeing more and more defective new homes.
The housing boom of the early 2000s was a legendary party followed by a massive, national hangover. And while the remodeling market is in full recovery-mode today, there are still plenty of headaches left over from that historic fiesta.
One of the biggest is something you don’t see reported on very often. Currently, hundreds of thousands of people across the country are discovering that their brand new homes were poorly built and now need costly repairs. In most cases, the repairs can be made, but issues remain. Just ask Franco Fournier, in Encinitas, Calif.

Each of us has implicit and explicit biases, both of which impact how we live, work and interact with our peers. With regard to work, these biases typically amount to both men and women tending to associate men with the career world and women with home and family life, says Liz Redford, a doctoral candidate in social psychology at the University of Florida and a consultant with Project Implicit.
“Our implicit biases may be less intended and less conscious than our explicit ones,” Redford adds. “Explicitly, we believe women should be as associated with career as they are with family, but implicitly, we might not think that.”

Remodelers often misunderstand the terms margin and markup when creating their budget and, as a result, may discover at the end of the year that they have been losing money. Markup describes the percentage they apply to the cost of a job to cover overhead and profit, whereas margin represents the percentage they earn on the selling price of a project. Instead of calculating their own margin and markup, most contractors just adopt numbers from industry specialists.
“They tell you what margins people are using, but they don’t teach you how to figure out what margin you need to use,” says Shawn McCadden, remodeling industry consultant and owner of Remodel My Business. “Part of the challenge is it depends on what you put above the line (job costs) and below the line (overhead) in determining what your markup and margin [should] be.”
