NARI Touchpoints: Survey 1 Results & Survey 2
|
    |
NARI
Every indication predicts another strong year coming for the remodeling industry, and we are all busy, right? Our first NARI Touchpoint question asked: how are you doing? The results are a bit lackluster but do show that most of us are doing slightly better than average.
• Two NARI members reported "Outstanding.” Wouldn't it be nice if we all were experiencing results like this?
• No non-NARI contractor reported "Outstanding” results, so there is a reward in belonging to NARI!
• Too many contractors reported less than average results. For as strong an economy as we are experiencing, too many of us are still struggling. Clearly there is room for improvement.
• The good news is that no one reported truly dismal results.
• The mean score out of 1-5 was 3.5
If you missed out on the first question it's not too late to reply, look for a link at the end of this week's question.

Following up, we want to know: Are you taking enough time off? Please answer this week's question in number of weeks you took off this summer, June through September. The survey is just 2 questions, quick and easy!
On Facebook, we'd love to know about your fantastic and fun moments this summer. Please post some vacation shots, enough to make your fellow remodelers jealous! Member David Merrick spent some time on St. Augustine beach relaxing with his granddaughters. What did you do?

Warm and dry basement living space begins with keeping the basement dry —
All moisture from outside must be directed away from the interior walls and slab. The drain pipe can go to daylight, a drywell, or a sump pump—depending on the circumstances.
Step-by-step
• Cut the slab back about a foot and a half or two feet, dig out the dirt down to the bottom of the footing, but don’t go deeper, or disturb the ground that the footing is bearing on.
• Install a drainpipe wrapped in a filter fabric sleeve on a bed of gravel.
• If you have a block foundation it’s a good idea to drill drain holes into the cores on the bottom blocks, so moisture can drain into the new perimeter drain.

Sue, a client, emailed me something like this:
“We have been talking for some time now. What Bob and I need is your frank assessment of how we can get closer to being successful running our business. At this point the business is more or less running us and we are sick and tired of that being the case. The next time we speak, tell us exactly what you think we need to do to get out of our own way. Don’t hold back.”

Here's insight into a geographical mismatch between where our acute shortages are, and where there's an oversupply of skilled workers.
Four reasons are often given for housing's labor shortage, now much more acute in the wake of three destructive hurricanes that ripped through the Caribbean, Florida, and Texas and a wildfire conflagration that blasted California, north of San Francisco.
• Skilled workers left the field after losing their jobs during and after the Great Recession;
• Immigrants are a waning stream of new skilled labor;
• Skilled laborers are aging out of the trades at a faster rate new young ones are coming in; and
• Young people don't get motivated by the thought of careers in the building trades.
Which is a root cause, and which is, instead, a symptom?

How to reduce ice dams, improve thermal performance, and boost durability of homes with vented attics
I have been doing energy audits for about six years now. I enjoy studying the building science and putting it into use to solve problems for customers. The only problem is that the work is typically in the attic or basement, which are two miserable and challenging places to work.
A drawing of a roof/wall ventilation scheme is easy to understand and looks easy to install. On paper, it is.
In practice, it is anything but easy. Lying on rips of plywood across ceiling joists and reaching deep into bird’s mouth cavities fishing around for fibrous insulation — usually pushing against your face, arms, and shoulders, is no picnic. It is often hot and always dusty.

This simple checklist will help you plan for a successful 2018
Many cultures have a tradition of marking the passage from one year to the next, whether it’s a party or just spending time with friends and family. Some also look at it as an opportunity to take inventory of the previous year and make resolutions for the new one. In business, the fourth quarter of the year can, and should, be a time for serious planning. This involves looking at the passing year’s financial results and beginning to make and test new forecasts and budgets for the coming year.
As you get ready to launch into 2018, take a look at your fourth-quarter planning process. Are you currently investing enough time and energy into preparing for 2018? Are you creating a written plan, the way you would create a blueprint for a remodeling project? Are you making sure you have alignment and buy-in on the 2018 plan and budget from all the key team members?

To make sure your project goes as smoothly as possible, pick up the notepad before you pick up the hammer.
Once your clients hand you a remodeling job, it’s entirely up to you to turn their visions into a reality. Of course, even with the skills and resources you have, it’s not always possible to get started and complete the project at your own pace — sometimes, little headaches pop up that stall your remodel or even leave it in a standstill.
As you know, you can’t foresee everything. But there are several preventive steps you can take in order to complete every project as smoothly as possible. Here are five suggestions to help make remodels headache-free.
