NARI Touchpoints: Survey 2 Results and Survey 3

NARI
Last week we asked about vacations and it turns out remodelers do know how to have fun with 64% of us taking 1-2 weeks off this summer, and 24% reporting no time off!
• 68% of us went on a trip
• 37% took long weekends
• 26% went to visit relatives
These are healthy statistics; and even though we are working hard, most of us have figured out how to carve some time off. It looks like some of us had really nice vacations.
• 5% took the dream vacation of their lives, wow! How about posting some of those pictures on NARI's Facebook Page? Member Dale Contant posted a photo of his family’s deep sea fishing trip, which you see pictured!• 5% went to a vacation home they own
On the plus side, only 5% reported staying home and working all summer. All work and no play is not good!
New responses to our first question "How are you Doing?" brought that answer down a little to an average of 3.3 indicating that we are not making enough money despite our hard work which leads to our next question:
Thinking about a typical week, how many hours are you putting into your business from Sunday morning to Saturday night? Count the hours you spend at home planning, calling customers and getting organized for the next day. Be realistic and count those hours you are putting in. Take our survey now!
If you missed the chance to answer our first question, you will have the opportunity after answering this week's very short survey. Next week we will move to a new topic: TAX REFORM. So keep following NARI to weigh in on NARI Touchpoints.

NARI
Our Social Media Engagement Campaign ran September 6, 2017 – November 6, 2017. In the past two months, we reached our goal of increasing member engagement on Pinterest and Instagram by 50%. We took Pinterest from 62 followers to 107 followers and Instagram from 92 followers to 220 followers. Although we did not increase our Facebook following by 50% - we did increase the amount of likes by over 500 people and we thank you for your support and help! In September, the NARI HQ Facebook page had 4,926 likes. Today it has 5,514 likes. Of course, we are not stopping here and will continue to grow our presence on social media. You may still access all documents, such as our Social Media Best Practices and more in the Chapter Brand Center. Questions? E-mail marketing@nari.org.

Few construction topics bore homebuyers more than insulation. You, of course, know better. You’re well aware that heating and cooling account for roughly half of the energy used in the average home. And you also know that good insulation helps homeowners save money and makes houses more comfortable.
Fiberglass, cellulose, and foam dominate the conversation, but the breadth of insulation products is wide, including cotton, straw, hemp and sheep’s wool, just to name a few.
Affordable Fiberglass
Traditionally, the over¬whelm¬ing choice for production home builders has been batt insulation, which usually means fiberglass but also includes mineral wool.
“Fiberglass and mineral wool batt insulation products are the most versatile on the market,” says Stacy Fitzgerald-Redd, director of communications for the Alexandria, Va.-based North American Insulation Manu¬fac¬tur¬ers Association. “There is a wide range of products and performance levels, allowing builders to achieve optimal R-value within any budget,” she says.

Sure, an informal agreement with minimal documentation is easy, but it could cost you time, money and referrals.
An annoyed customer leaves an after-hours voice mail. The crew you sent to her house last week to install siding didn’t clean up at the end of the day or when the job was closed out. They asked to use the bathroom ten times a day, then tracked dirt inside. This morning? Cigarette butts in the flowerbed. It was the cigarette butts that prompted the call.
It’s a new crew whose work for others you’ve inspected. This is the third job they’ve done for your company, and the first complaint. The agreement you have with this sub is wholly verbal, apart from an address, a price and a start date on a scrap of paper. So what now? Do you apologize to the homeowner and resolve not to use the crew again?

Not a Facebook fan? You may be one of the few. As of the second quarter of 2017, the website Statistica reports, “Facebook had 2 billion monthly active users,” which it defines as ”those who have logged in to Facebook during the last 30 days.”
Too Big to Ignore
It’s always a mixed bag on Facebook. From kitten-picture cuteness to circus acts gone wrong, pictures of meals that only make us hungry to acid exchanges of political views, logging on to the social media giant is often a mood changer, for better or worse. Yet millions spend hours every a day scrolling through their Facebook newsfeed, sending messages, and posting relentlessly.

Beware: The personal drive that brought your firm success may also be trampling employees who have ideas they want to share.
So much has been written about how to be a better leader/manager. The variety of suggestions leaves you feeling confused about what to work on first. Commonly, the result is that nothing is done and things stay the same.
A driven owner who has good employees often is an owner who tends to overwhelm the employees. The owner’s sense of what is possible makes it difficult for that boss to consider anything the rest of the team suggests. The result often is good employees leaving to work somewhere else.
Why did they leave? What are they looking for? They want to be listened to. It’s that simple.

Three steps to mastering something new: Learn it, do it, then teach.
Larry Meadows, President of Oregon-based Clearwater Exteriors and a good friend of mine, shared a simple business theme from his organization that really hit a chord for me. He said that anyone trying to master a task or business principle had to first “learn it,” then “do it.” Learning comes from study and observation over an extended period of time; “doing” puts the learning into practice.
It seems obvious, but with all of the information sources available today, it's easy to assume that, because you watched a video or read an article about some new skill or concept, you're competent with that skill or concept. But you can’t learn how to swim from simply reading a book or watching a video; you need to dive into the pool, feel the water, and understand the risks. "learning" and “Doing” both require repetition and practice until you can perform competently and consistently.

As technology innovations proliferate, those who use them first will win.
As one of the last steps to prepare for our impending relocation, I needed to post “Emergency No Parking” signs in front of our row house in downtown Washington, D.C. The permits reserve parking for the moving van for two weekdays between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. That time period overlaps at both ends with rush hour on 16th St., which is a five-lane avenue with heavy commuter traffic.
The signs, which have to be posted at least 72 hours ahead of time, not only warn local residents that there will be fewer available parking spots during non-rush hours, they also alert commuters that there will soon be one hellacious bottleneck in their daily trek to and from work.
The police department provided seven stiff paper signs preprinted with dates and times of the parking restriction, so all I needed to do was fasten them to stakes that could then be driven into the grass tree box at the curb. Simple.

Recently during Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced they completed 127 federal enforcement actions over the past year to ensure contractors are complying with their lead-safe practices stated in the Toxic Substances Control Act, the Residential Lead-Based Paint Hazard Reduction Act and other EPA rules.
Since October 2016, EPA finalized 121 civil settlements for alleged violations of one or more of the three lead-based paint rules--the Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule; the Lead Disclosure Rule; and the Lead-based Paint Activities Rule for abatements--and filed three complaints for ongoing actions. EPA and the U.S. Department of Justice also prosecuted one criminal case involving violations of lead paint laws and finalized two Clean Air Act settlements that included lead paint abatement
