NARI Touchpoints: Remodelers are Workaholics
|
    |
NARI
WOW! We always knew we were a hard working group of professionals, but the results of our last survey surprised us! How many hours a week do you work?
• 44% of us are working 60 hours or more a week
• Another 26% are working 50 or more hours a week
• Only 15% are working 40 hours or less
71% of remodelers work 50 hours or more each week, 10 – 12 hours every day. We’re worn out just writing about this!
We started this series of Touchpoint questions by asking, "How are you doing?" We’re asked this question when we meet other remodelers, family and friends, but let’s be honest, do we always tell the TRUTH?
Your HONEST answers to our Touchpoint questions have given us a chance to report the TRUTH:
• We are not making enough money
• We are not taking enough time off or getting away on real vacations
• We working too way too long and probably too hard
How are you doing? Do you have a roof over your head? Is your family well cared for? Is the effort you are putting into your remodeling business worth the benefits and rewards you are receiving? Do you still have the enthusiasm for the business you did when you started it?
All things considered: Are YOU Happy? Are you satisfied? Take our next survey now!

Pro Remodeler
Maybe, depending on circumstances
The general rule in most states is that a party in a civil action is not entitled to recover attorney’s fees unless the claim is based on either a contract or statute that authorizes such a recovery. But in some jurisdictions there is a lesser-known way a party may recover fees: The Wrongful Act Doctrine, which permits the recovery of attorney fees when one incurs such fees as a result of unnecessarily having to maintain or defend a lawsuit with a third party.

Jim Collins literally wrote the book on building a successful company. Good to Great, published in 2001, is one of the classic management manifestos, accumulating 25 years of rigorous research to identify 16 concepts that “make great companies tick.”
Markup & Profit Revisited
For many years we've talked about the importance of having an Operating Capital Reserve Account (O.C.R.A.). I want to talk about it again today because so many business owners don't have one.
An O.C.R.A. is a savings account, or if you prefer, a CYA account. It keeps you out of financial trouble when bad things happen. It eliminates the need for a line of credit, loans against your home, or borrowing from friends, relatives or loan sharks. It stops you from having to sell tools or equipment you need in order to make payroll. It gives you the freedom to walk away from bad jobs. Most importantly, it keeps your family free from financial worries, which helps you sleep better.
Pro Remodeler
The line between doing business and committing fraud is thinner than you think.
Home repair fraud is so common a problem that many states’ attorneys general publish pamphlets about it to warn consumers. The irony is that most remodelers don’t know much about fraud or the laws and penalties associated with it.
Many of the problems start with the well-known scenario of “robbing Peter to pay Paul”: A remodeler uses the first payment from a new job to cover the expenses of another ongoing project. The practice is not uncommon in remodeling, particularly among small companies that don’t sit on a lot of capital. And, as long as a succession of projects is scheduled, it can help to sustain a remodeler’s business—albeit it in a precarious legal gray area.
Remodeling
With the next year coming in just a couple of months, you all are working on your budget for 2018, right? If not, you should be. How can you get where you want to go if you don’t know where you are going?
What can make budgeting more compelling is crafting a simple set of understandings as the basis for your business. These understandings will help you build a simple business plan, which makes budgeting for the next year easier and more compelling.
Remodeling
Retail prices have gone up sharply, pricing expert finds.
The same firm that provides the cost numbers in REMODELING's Cost vs. Value report is alerting pros to make sure they are including new, higher prices when they bid on jobs.
"Since a series of hurricanes hit our country, three material types have increased in cost dramatically: dimensional lumber, plywood, and pressure-treated lumber," RemodelMAX's Bill O'Donnell wrote in an email to be sent to users of Clear Estimates, a software program that uses RemodelMAX numbers on product costs to help create estimates.
Remodelers Advantage
It is that time of year again. The trick-or-treating is over, you set your clocks back, the leaves are changing colors and holiday travel plans are being made. Then you read blog posts and articles reminding you that it’s time to put together your budget for the coming year. Are you excited, indifferent or frustrated?
Creating a good, ambitious, yet achievable budget for the coming year is one of the most important management activities a business owner can do to improve performance. The budget sets the goals, targets and expectations for the coming year.
