From May 3: Tyler Cowen may be onto something here with his take on American complacency. Cowen is an economist at George Mason University and an author. His latest title is "The Complacent Class."
And this, in our minds, relates to what 63 percent of our Builder 100 survey respondents among home building's top 200 companies tell us is their biggest worry right now. Labor.
Here's important insight on home building labor's "gorilla in the room" issue: Why there are fewer and fewer young people entering construction trades.

By Townsquare Interactive and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry
From April 12: Reviews are a tough business for remodelers, especially when you run into the occasional unfavorable review from a customer you thought you served well, only to find out you missed the mark. Or something you could have easily found a resolution for was never addressed because the customer suffered in silence rather than being up front about their feelings. Your business may have excellent star ratings on one credible website, but on another website, fail miserably at meeting any customer’s expectations. Sometimes you may ask yourself, “What gives?”

From April 19: Remodeling is having a moment in the spotlight. It’s difficult to turn on the TV without seeing one of the hosts of a home remodeling show; HGTV saw 13 percent ratings growth in 2016, boosted by smash successes like "Fixer Upper," by far its most popular show with an average of 4.6 million viewers per episode in 2016. For Construction Pros
From March 16: There is a story about the building of the Golden Gate Bridge that should resonate with contractors of any size. Concerned that their bridge would be slowed down from finishing on time, the builders had a large safety net secured to the building portion of the bridge.

From Oct. 20: Google search, “How much does it cost to remodel a kitchen?” and the first answer says that the average kitchen remodel runs $21,773. A couple of scrolls down reveals more information: The job should take four to six weeks; custom cabinets are available for as low as $500 per linear foot; and — confusingly — kitchen remodels actually have at least two average prices, the second of which is $20,556.

From March 1: Over the past 30 years as a consultant to remodelers, I’ve noticed two rules that apply to pros. The first you’ve probably heard of: the 80-20 rule, in which 20 percent of what you put into a venture yields 80 percent of the results. The other one, which I first became aware of from a May 1983 Harvard Business Review essay, you likely haven’t. That rule, paraphrased, is that every company can go through up to five predictable stages of growth.
