The 2010 NATA Foundation Silent Auction features some great items up for grabs at this year's NATA 61st Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposia from June 22-25 in Philadelphia. Earlier this month, NATA released a new online resource based on the Recommendations and Guidelines for Appropriate Medical Coverage of Intercollegiate Athletics. The interactive AMCIA tool, developed by the College/University Athletic Trainers' Committee, includes an online calculator, the definition of appropriate medical care in the college and university setting, strategies for using the calculator and a list of frequently asked questions.  More

CDC, Organizations Team Up for Concussion Education

The CDC and several medical and educational organizations are asking school professionals to use the new "Heads Up to Schools: Know Your Concussion ABCs" materials. They include fact sheets, a checklist, a poster and a magnet to help identify and respond to concussions in an array of school settings. Athletic trainers can help by circulating these materials.  More

Cheerleading Association Works to Increase Safety with New Rules

The American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators has released new school cheerleading rules designed to increase safety. The AACCA now recommends prohibiting elementary, middle school and junior high cheerleaders from performing all basket tosses and double twisting dismounts, reserving those skills for the high school level only. Young Professional Volunteers Needed at Annual Meeting

NATA and the Young Professionals' Committee are asking volunteers to help with a nutrition and hydration clinic at the Annual Meeting. At least 100 kids and teenagers from the Police Athletic League of Philadelphia will arrive at the convention center at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 23, and learn the basics of hydration and nutrition in six stages. Volunteers are needed to help run the stations during the two-hour event. Contact Carissa Spraberry at for the PAL event. Injuries to young people related to the use of crutches, wheelchairs and walkers are on the rise — up an estimated 8 percent annually between 1991 and 2008, research shows. According to Ohio researchers, the use of these "mobility aids," while intended to help people get around, sent more than 3,000 people aged 19 or younger to the emergency room in 2008, alone.  More
