Today’s installment (Episode 13) of “Future Focus” features NSPS Executive Director Curt Sumner and his guest, current NSPS President Lisa Van Horn. Curt and Lisa recently sat down to chat about what has been happening within NSPS and how the profession and organization are changing with the times. Thanks for listening to “Surveyor Says!”

As a member of the Alliance for Responsible Professional Licensing (ARPL), NCEES would like to share a news release from ARPL announcing the results of new opinion research. This research measured public attitudes on deregulation of professional licensing.
The survey comes as state legislatures across the nation consider legislation to weaken or eliminate licensing requirements for complex, highly technical professions like engineers, surveyors, architects, landscape architects, and CPAs.
The results show that voters recognize professional licensing is the best way to protect the public’s health, safety, and welfare and they want it to remain rigorous.

News about the Department of the Interior (DOI) grounding its fleet of drones made headlines late last year, but the language used by the DOI positioned it as more of a review than a suspension. That leeway has been removed now that Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt has signed Secretary's Order 3379. The directive orders the cessation of non-emergency unmanned aircraft systems fleet operations. The statement confirms that drones will be able to be used in emergency situations, although that will require the department to go through its own waiver process. Those situations are defined as fighting wildfires, search and rescue, and dealing with natural disasters that may threaten life or property. How long this review will take and what exactly it will look like has not been defined, but it is clear that getting the DOI’s drone fleet back into the air for routine operations is going to take some time.

Once a year, the NOAA hydrographic community, those who measure and describe the features of the seafloor to update nautical charts and support a variety of sciences, meets at the Field Procedures Workshop to not only share information, but have frank discussions about their challenges and the path forward in preparation for the upcoming hydrographic field season. Themes of this year’s workshop include: 1) the Presidential Memorandum on Ocean Mapping of the United States Exclusive Economic Zone and the Shoreline and Nearshore of Alaska; 2) unmanned systems for hydrography; 3) innovative use of boat-mounted lidar for precise port mapping; and 3) plans to sunset raster nautical chart production. With these themes in mind, attendees are discussing best practices, aligning technology with policy, future plans and strategies, and flagging needed changes in NOAA’s documented requirements and procedures. Workshop attendees include NOAA leadership, survey technicians and ship crews, navigation response teams, representatives from hydrographic data centers, project managers, shoreline mapping experts, hydrographic survey contractors, NOAA software developers, commercial software developers, and sonar manufacturers.

NSPS lobbyist John "JB" Byrd recently met with Desi Maes (R), a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in the 24th Congressional District of Texas. This is an open seat caused by the decision of current Congressman Kenny Marchant (R) to retire at the end of this Congress. Mr. Maes was an Army Green Beret, Ranger, and Infantry Commander who served his country for 20 years. After retiring from the United States Military in 2005, Maes was an entrepreneur establishing two successful businesses following his tenure as a corporate executive at two Fortune 500 companies. The primary in Texas is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2020. Click here to learn more about the NSPS PAC, the Jefferson Club, and NSPS PAC Chairman Jon Warren's "Drive to 75" Campaign.

One of my favorite parts of the day is opening up LinkedIn and Instagram where I can admire the lives of surveyors around the world.
You work in some of the most beautiful places ... and not-so-beautiful places. I get to see how deep the passion is for the surveying industry, your willingness to share advice with people on the other side of the world, and, professionally, how equipment is being used. Our world has never been more connected.
