FEMA has new draft documents to update the three volumes of "Guidelines and Specifications for Flood Hazard Mapping Partners," as well as Appendix A regarding datum. Are you still using the MT-1 or MT-EZ form to apply for a Letter of Map Amendment? Now you can request changes to your flood zone designation online using this convenient new FEMA web application! LOMA-eligible requests must be concerning properties on naturally high ground, which have not been elevated by fill. Click here to learn more about the new Online LOMC application. In the near future, the Online LOMC application will be able to process all types of LOMC requests.

Each year, through the National Society of Professional Surveyors Foundation, $25,000 in scholarships funded by a variety of individuals, companies and organizations are made available to encourage and support college education in geospatial sciences. These scholarships are a great opportunity for college students enrolled in surveying, mapping, geographic information systems and geodetic science programs. The news is good: In the past five years, the U.S. has made great strides toward reducing imports of petroleum products. While conservation and increases in fuel efficiency have played an important role, production of oil and gas has increased as well. Since 2006, oil production in the U.S. and Canada has gone up by 16 percent to nearly 16 million barrels per day.

Who are you? What do you do? How often are you confronted with these questions? Better yet, how about the answers? "You're the guy who looks through the telescope thingy," or, my favorite, "My cousin is a landscaper." How often does this happen to a doctor or a lawyer or an accountant? Unquestionably, members of these distinguished professions are held in high regard and their activities are understood. What is the distinction between the Land Surveyor and an accountant?

By Todd Danielson: I very recently returned from the International LiDAR Mapping Forum held in Denver from Feb. 11-13. I go most years, as it's usually held nearby in Denver, and it's one of my favorite conferences to attend. One reason is because it's such a manageable size. Yes, it's been growing every year, but it's still a relatively small gathering — it's held at a hotel rather than a large convention center.
