NSPS lobbyist John "JB" Byrd recently met with Troy Balderson (R), a candidate for an open seat in the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio created by the recent resignation of Rep. Pat Tiberi (R-OH). The primary in the 12th Congressional District is set for May 8 with the special general election date of August 7. Currently serving his second term as State Senator, he is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and a member of the Senate Finance Committee. Prior to his time in the State Senate, Troy and his family owned and operated a farm in Adamsville, Ohio for several generations and he also worked at an automotive dealership that had been in the family for three generations.

No matter what the future holds, prepare to meet challenges head on. Future-proof your resume by becoming a Certified Survey Technician (CST). This unique four-level certification program indicates official recognition by NSPS that a person can perform surveying tasks at a specific technical level.
Show what you can do! Decide between the field or office track. Visit www.nsps.us.com for details.

A recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report found that the U.S. Border Patrol, part of the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), has made progress deploying surveillance technology — a mix of radars, sensors, and cameras — along the southwest U.S. border. CBP spent about $2.3 billion to deploy fencing from fiscal years 2007 through 2015 and constructed 654 miles of fencing by 2015. GAO reported in February 2017 that CBP was taking a number of steps in sustaining tactical infrastructure — such as fencing, roads, and lighting — along the southwest border. Several federal agencies, and private firms serving as government contractors, have also provided surveying and mapping of the border and for planning and design of the boarder wall supported by President Trump.
Inside GNSS
An independent technical review ordered by the federal government's top GPS policy body found that there is sufficient data to assess the risk of using frequencies near the GPS band for a ground-based communications network. Existing test results can also be used to set power limits for other similarly located projects, said a panel of technical specialists. Two tests sponsored by Ligado Networks, however, did not meet minimum criteria for inclusion, the panel said.

Geospatially smart people are attuned to geographical phenomena, patterns and principles, and apply that knowledge to practices, decisions and activities. There is no one single test for geospatial smartness, though we can describe geospatial habits of mind, and psychometric tests are useful for measuring dimensions of spatial cognition. Certain types of activities can improve how quickly and accurately we can complete simple spatial exercises.

GPS World
PPP. It's one of the many acronyms (or initialisms, if you prefer) associated with the uses of global navigation satellite systems. It stands for precise point positioning. But what is that? Isn't all GNSS positioning precise? Well, it's a matter of degree. Take GPS, for example. The most common kind of GPS signal use is to employ the L1 C/A-code pseudorange measurements along with the broadcast satellite orbit and clock information to produce a point position.

The focus of the professional surveying societies today seems to be on the decline of the number of surveyors out there. Some are even beginning to raise this level of concern to that of soft panic.
From the outside, the surveying community is headed for a perfect storm of obsolescence. Technology has contributed to the depletion of apprenticeships; educational institutions are struggling to meet enrollment targets; and every day more and more surveyors are leaving the labor force through attrition and retirement.
