A recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report found the federal investment in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education programs remained relatively stable from fiscal years 2010 to 2016, although the number of programs declined from 209 to 163. One potential outcome for this study is to assess whether programs are broadening access to groups historically underrepresented in STEM fields.

NSPS lobbyist John "JB" Byrd recently met with John Kingston (R), a challenger candidate for the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts in a seat held by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). The primary is set for September 4. In 2015, John finished his 16-year career at AMG, a public company valued at more than $10 billion that manages more than $700 billion in assets. He then turned his focus to establishing Sword & Spoon Group, a mix of non-profit and for-profit initiatives that focuses on strengthening all facets of civic life — in public policy, education, arts, and service.

NSPS has created a link for the geospatial highlights for the bill, including with several provisions relevant to the 3D Elevation Program (3DEP). Specifically, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) was extended to July 31, 2018. In addition, there are new programs and funding for broadband infrastructure deployment and wildfire mapping.
