U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), along with Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) last week introduced S. 1295, the Federal Land Asset Inventory Reform (FLAIR) Act, a bipartisan, bicameral bill to create a current, accurate inventory of lands owned by the federal government. Representatives Bruce Westerman (R-AR) and Ron Kind (D-WI) introduced a companion bill, (H.R. 2485, in the House of Representatives. NSPS Executive Director Curtis Sumner said, "The National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) commends the leadership provided by Senators Kevin Cramer (R-ND) and Martin Heinrich (D-NM) and Representatives Ron Kind (D-WI) and Bruce Westerman (R-AR) for their bipartisan introduction of the Federal Land Asset Inventory Reform (FLAIR) Act of 2019. NSPS stands ready to help with the objectives of this important reform legislation, and strongly encourages Congress and the President to enact the FLAIR Act into law." North Dakota Society of Professional Land Surveyors (NDSPLS) President Jason Main said, "The surveying profession would greatly benefit from a current, accurate inventory of Federal lands. Particularly in the Western states, public land survey system surveys would be more efficient. NDSPLS is very thankful for Senator Cramer's vision in addressing this important government reform effort as authorized in the Federal Land Asset Inventory Reform (FLAIR) Act." Both were quoted in a news release lawmakers issued on the bill.

Thanks to Wendy Lathrop (NSPS President 1996) for sharing a weather-related video in which the work of Surveyors is recognized, although all Surveyors will pick up on the fact that in a scene showing surveying in a stream the level rod isn't held vertically (plumb). Listen here.

The House Committee on Natural Resources, Subcommittee on Water, Oceans and Wildlife held a hearing earlier today on several bills, including H.R. 2189, the Digital Coast Act of 2019. This is a bill NSPS has long supported and for which members advocated during the 2019 NSPS Day on the Hill in April. The bill would require the Secretary of Commerce, acting through the NOAA Administrator, to establish a constituent-driven program to provide a digital information platform capable of efficiently integrating coastal data with decision-support tools, training, and best practices and to support collection of priority coastal geospatial data to inform and improve local, State, regional, and Federal capacities to manage the coastal region.
