O*NET is a primary source of occupational information, and Research Triangle Institute (RTI) assists the Department of Labor in keeping this information relevant and up-to-date. The National Society of Professional Surveyors has again been contacted to provide assistance in updating information for the category "Geodetic Surveyors". While one might think that many NSPS members do not fall into this category, certainly in today’s world of technological advancements the list of activities performed by different categories of "Surveyor" overlap. As an example of this, among the long Task List for Geodetic Surveyor is included: "compute, retrace, or adjust existing surveys of features such as highway alignments, property boundaries, utilities, control and other surveys to match the ground elevation-dependent grids, geodetic grids, or property boundaries and to ensure accuracy and continuity of data used in engineering, surveying, or construction projects".
If you are interested in participating in this activity, please contact: Curt Sumner, NSPS Executive Director (curtis.sumner@nsps.us.com). Your name, address, telephone number, and email address will be provided to O*NET, and they will select a random sample of these experts, and call them to request their participation by completing a set of questionnaires about their work.

The National Geospatial Advisory Committee (NGAC) met by webinar last week, and NSPS Federal Lobbyist John "JB" Byrd participated which covered this agenda. The NGAC convened a sub-group to review the initial analysis of the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) Geospatial Data Act (GDA) Tiger Team. The NGAC’s initial comments are organized into a general section followed by specific comments related to the different parts of the law that impact the FGDC and the NGAC, as well as feedback on the Tiger Team’s initial assessment of each section.

The American Enterprise Institute (AEI) just released a study ranking the 30 metropolitan areas with the highest number of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) jobs in 2018 in terms of economic vitality and affordability. Besides the number of STEM jobs that a metro had in 2018, the study also took into account total job growth since 1990 and affordability for first time buyers (FTBs) in 2017. The three metrics used were: 1) For STEM employment, Bureau of Labor Statistics data; 2) Overall employment growth based on Bureau of Economic Analysis data for 1990-2017; and 3) Affordability for FTBs in these 30 STEM metropolitan areas were based on the AEI Housing Center’s ranking of a metro’s median home price to median income ratio in 2017.

In a response to an inquiry by House Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman Peter DeFazio, the U.S. Department of Transportation provided an outline of its process to implement a terrestrial timing system to complement and backup GPS signals.
In early March, DeFazio and three other members of Congress sent a letter to Transportation Secretary Chao asking about progress on a GPS Backup Technology Demonstration first mandated by law in December 2017.

From my previous article: One of the most important things to understand when it comes to using survey-grade GPS systems is the difference among the many datums, reference ellipsoids, and coordinate systems that exist. If you do not understand what these systems actually mean, the results of your work are destined to be flawed and inaccurate at some point in your career.

Editor Alan Cameron talked with Johnathon Caldwell, Lockheed Martin's vice president of navigation systems.
Tell us about the on-orbit performance of the GPS III SV01, launched in December.
On Jan. 8 we began broadcasting navigation data across all signal chains, and the satellite has been in checkout mode since then. According to all the reports I get from various independent agencies, the vehicle has been performing outstanding, and the payload performance has been exceeding expectations.

Ice is a hot topic when it comes to understanding and monitoring how this fragile component of the Earth system is being affected by climate change. Scientists go to great lengths to study changes happening in the remote icy reaches of our planet — a subject that is being discussed in detail at the Living Planet Symposium in Italy. Among the results being presented is a novel 3-D dataset of Antarctica.
