NSPS
A comprehensive energy bill introduced last week in the U.S. Senate includes two provisions that are a major victory for NSPS. S. 1460, introduced by Energy Committee chair, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and ranking minority member Maria Cantrell (D-WA) includes a modified version of the NSPS-supported Federal Land Asset Inventory Reform (FLAIR) Act and an authorization for the 3D elevation program (3DEP) of the USGS. The bill has been put on a fast track procedure, with full Senate action possible before the August recess. In the bill, Section 6101. CADASTRE OF FEDERAL REAL PROPERTY, pages 581-586 and Section 10104. 3D ELEVATION PROGRAM, pages 815-838 are of note to NSPS members.

NGS
NGS held a kickoff with constituents in Durango, CO, to officially mark the start of the Geoid Slope Validation Survey 2017 project. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) co-hosted a daytime event, and the Southwest Chapter of the Professional Land Surveyors of Colorado held an evening event. CDOT has been a strong supporter of the project, helping to drill holes for many of the 223 survey marks from Durango to Walsenburg, CO. The survey community recognizes the importance of the project as NGS transitions from a vertical to a geopotential datum based on gravity data. Colorado was chosen for the survey for its extremely challenging topography, which ascends to an elevation of 10,856 feet. The survey will consist of leveling, GPS, gravity, and deflection of vertical measurements.

NSPS
The June 21 edition of NSPS News & Views featured the article 45°North – 90°W Geographic Marker about a marker set at the intersection of the 45th Parallel of Latitude and the 90th Meridian of Longitude which is the center of the Northwest Hemisphere. Marathon County Surveyor Christopher Fieri will join host Curt Sumner to talk about this.

Point of Beginning
The surveyor's field notebook isn't going to go away any time soon, but as tools advance, the role of paper and pencil will be replaced by the same devices that are changing our personal lives. That's the view of Andy Beckerson, director of business development for Korec, a U.K.-based provider of surveying and geospatial solutions.

Inside GNSS
Assertions by Virginia-based Ligado that its GPS interference issues were largely resolved were called into question by statements made by two key agencies and fresh opposition to a related spectrum request from nearly two dozen companies and associations.
Ligado is seeking to build a terrestrial broadband network using frequencies close to the GPS band that had been allocated originally for satellites.

GPS World
Technology has improved the scientific community's ability to measure in many ways that our ancestors would have trouble believing. From obtaining measurements across galaxies down to the tiniest of atom splitting, our ability to measure is exceedingly robust. The land surveying profession has benefited from this ongoing technological revolution in many ways and has advanced our work in many new directions never thought possible.

Bloomberg
A good rocket launch site has a few important characteristics. An unpopulated patch of land near an ocean is preferable, so no one gets showered with wayward bits of flaming metal. It's also nice if it's on the equator — like all spheres rotating on an axis, the Earth spins fastest in the middle, which provides rocket boosters with extra oomph. In other words, the best sites tend to be in remote, tropical locations.
