Surveyors Historical Society
On behalf of the Surveyors Historical Society (SHS), the Rendezvous 2017 Organizing Committee (Rich Leu, Dave Ingram, Chas Langelan, Kim Buchheit, and Melinda Gilpin) invites all Surveyors (and others) to join us at Concord, Massachusetts this September 13 to 16 for Rendezvous 2017. It's the first national gathering SHS has ever held in New England. We have been working on this Rendezvous since 2014, and have developed an informative and memorable program. As you might imagine, Massachusetts and New England have vast surveying history (nearly 400 years); but there was one particular surveyor in Concord who never knew wealth or material possessions in his life, but was admired by local townspeople and gained international fame after his death ... surveyor-philosopher Henry David Thoreau. Of all the remarkable men and women produced by Concord, this humble surveyor is the brightest shining star. Of course, Concord is also indelibly famed as the place where Massachusetts Minutemen in 1775 fired "The Shot Heard 'Round the World" — changing world history forever. All this will be part of Rendezvous 2017.
Unfortunately, space is limited. Concord's capacities are small, and registration is approaching its "cap" very quickly. The purpose of this message is to urge everyone who is interested to sign-up now, without delay, while space exists. Also — although the published brochure doesn't mention it, "Single-Day" and "Lecture Session Only" registrations are being offered. Anyone interested in such options should contact SHS at 614-798-5257 for details.
And lastly, if you've never gone on a tour of Colonial Boston (or if it has been years since you did) the day-long excursion on Saturday September 16 is not to be missed. The finest guide in Boston has crafted a unique outing just for SHS, which at $79 is the bargain of the year. Included are motor coach travel, all-day expert tour, lunch at John Hancock's 1760s "counting house," and a fun ferry ride. Like our Rendezvous itself, registration for this event is filling up quickly. Please join us.
You can find full information and sign-up at www.SurveyorsHistoricalSociety.com. Everyone is invited. We hope to see you at historic Massachusetts this September 13-16. Many thanks, and highest regards as always from SHS,

A bill recently introduced in the United States Senate by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and others, known as the Geospatial Data Act, S.1253, has caused controversy with some geospatial groups, particularly with regard to provisions that reinforces and helps clarify the application of the Brooks Act's qualifications based selection (QBS) process to Federal agency surveying and mapping contracts and another that preserves Federal recognition of state licensing. The bill defines "geospatial data" in a manner that closely resembles the NCEES model law. The staff of Senator Hatch has been working with NSPS lobbyist John "JB" Byrd and Government Affairs Consultant John Palatiello on the bill and continues to engage NSPS on these important issues, with input from NSPS Executive Director Curt Sumner and Government Affairs Chairman Pat Smith. NSPS members can be assured it has a seat at the table and continues to provide input on this legislation in order to advocate for NSPS priorities and principles, particularly on licensing and QBS.

Implementation of the NSPS workforce development initiative by the Maryland Society of Surveyors (MSS) is featured in the cover story of this month's P.O.B. magazine. The program began with MSS sending the NSPS model letter to the Maryland Department of Education office for Career and Technical Education (CTE) and the MSS Baltimore chapter sending the model letter to its local workforce development board. The program is designed to introduce high school students to the field of surveying and begin a career path for the next generation of surveyors. NSPS encourages all state surveying societies, and local chapters, to use the model letters to initiate contact with their state and local career and workforce offices. The NSPS website includes the model letters and links to identify state and local offices to send the letters.
Note from NSPS News & Views editor: All state surveying societies are encouraged to share news about their efforts related to Workforce Development and other activities.

What will regulation, certification, and licensing of the surveying profession look like in the near and distant future?
Surveying is and always has been molded by external influences: markets, technologies, economic conditions, demographics, and competition from outside of the profession. Other professionals, consumers, and prosumers have found that the legacy mysteries of precise measurement are within reach.

Inside GNSS
The nation's leading GPS experts said in a newly released letter that a controversial broadband network would still interfere significantly with GPS receivers despite revisions to the network plan. The right choice, the group advised key administration officials, is to protect GPS, which underlies aviation and much of the nation's other critical infrastructure.

It's human nature to strive for order and structure around information. We make lists. We design and populate taxonomies. We produce charts, figures and tables. We rely on alphabets and chronologies to place knowledge into a sequenced order. In the absence of structures that allow us to organize our knowledge, we would overly tax our cognitive abilities to remember and to reason.

I've always been a strong proponent of good cartography since my early days in geographic information systems when I saw countless examples of very poor GIS map products. Regrettably, many early practitioners of GIS understood the software but lacked an appreciation and understanding of the good cartographic principals that are absolutely necessary to communicate spatial data well.
