Beginning with the 2016 ASCA conference, the NSPS representatives attending this conference have been strongly supported by members of the respective state surveying society in the state where the conference is held. This year, Ron Nelms, President; Annette Hovorka, President-Elect; Rob McMillan, Treasurer; members Marta Alvarez and Colin O'Brien of the California Land Surveyors Association provided that support to NSPS At-Large Director (and CLSA member) Armand Marois, NSPS President Kim Leavitt, and Darren Leavitt who once again provided the "Sand Box" exhibit through cooperation with the Idaho State University School of Applied Sciences. Approximately 3800 school counselors from across the country, and abroad, attended the 2018 conference in Los Angeles.
In addition to the sandbox, and making a special presentation to attendees, NSPS also highlighted its role as the North and Central American distributor of the "Get Kids into Survey" posters develop by Elaine Ball in England.

Brian Portwood series
This 14th edition focuses on a Nevada case, centered upon the uniquely western issue of RS 2477 R/W, as this month we reach the 152nd anniversary of that highly controversial federal law. Here we will track a conflict which is steeped in history, observing how interaction between federal statutes and state statutes can operate to keep both historic laws and precious historical survey evidence vital in our modern world.

NSPS scored a legislative victory last week in the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. The markup hearing favorably reported H.R. 4881, the "Precision Agriculture Connectivity Act of 2018." The bill requires the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to establish a task force for meeting connectivity and technology needs of precision agriculture in the United States. The task force's duties include: (1) identifying and measuring current gaps in broadband Internet access service coverage of cropland and ranchland; (2) assembling a comprehensive guide of all federal programs and resources working to expand broadband Internet access service on unserved cropland and ranchland; and (3) developing policy recommendations to promote the rapid, expanded deployment of fixed and mobile broadband Internet access service on unserved cropland and ranchland. The task force can be viewed as akin to the Technical Mapping Advisor Council ("TMAC") that advises the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on flood mapping, but this task force will focus on precision agricultural and rural broadband coverage and infrastructure deployment. The bill's lead sponsor, Rep. Bob Latta (R-OH) included a provision that can includes geospatial involvement in the task force. The managers amendment included the provision to include "representatives with relevant expertise in broadband network data collection, geospatial analysis, and coverage mapping;...". Speaking on behalf of the bill and managers amendment were the bill sponsors: Bob Latta (R-OH) and Dave Loebsack (D-IA), as well as Buddy Carter (R-GA). For view the discussion on this bill and the amendment to include "geospatial analysis", then watch segment 4:07:45-4:15:00.

More than two-thirds of states responded to a nationwide survey on elections data conducted in the first half of 2018. Responses were coordinated by state government representatives who focus on the development and deployment of mapping data and systems across state agencies and local governments.
"An electoral system with integrity — enhanced by accurate, authoritative geographic data and presented clearly and transparently — has never been more important," said NSGIC President Andy Rowan.

Drone maker DJI is introducing improvements to its geofencing system. Professional drone pilots with authorization to fly in sensitive locations can now use a streamlined application process to receive unlocking codes within 30 minutes.
DJI's geofencing system uses GPS and other navigational satellite signals to automatically help prevent drones from flying near sensitive locations such as airports, nuclear power plants and prisons.

Geospatial professionals don't need an introduction to CORS. For everyone else, it's an acronym that stands for continuously operating reference systems: geodetic receivers that log GNSS observables continuously which, when transmitted to users with survey-grade receivers, help them achieve centimeter-accuracy measurements.
CORS stations have a range of about 70 kilometers (~43 miles).
