ACSM and Survey Summit 2011: ACSM Congress votes to disband, turn over operations to NSPS

The just completed 2011 Annual Conference of ACSM culminated in a historic decision to disband the ACSM Congress of Member Organizations and begin the process of dissolving ACSM. Held in conjunction with the Survey Summit in San Diego, the annual event was marked by intense discussions about the future of ACSM. These resulted in a motion by the ACSM Realignment Committee to the ACSM Congress to accept the ARC report and its recommendations as fulfillment of the committee's task. More

At its last meeting on July 13, the ACSM Congress adopted the following motion:

It is moved that in the interests of leading toward a viable single organization, the ACSM Congress be disbanded and the dissolution of ACSM begin and in conjunction with the process, ACSM turn over all operation, control, assets and liabilities to NSPS.

At stake is the high-precision GPS industry as we know it. If LightSquared's current proposal is approved by the FCC, it will render tens of thousands, and possibly hundreds of thousands of GPS receivers obsolete starting as early as next year. The FCC is accepting public comments until July 30 and replies to those comments until Aug. 15. After the public comment period is closed, the FCC can render a decision at any time. More
