As many NSPS members are aware, the Augmented Sandbox (designed at UC Davis in California) has been utilized by a number of Surveyors, Colleges, and NSPS as an affective way to "talk surveying" with a variety of audiences. SPACECO, Inc. (employer of NSPS Vice President Tim Burch) has garciously agreed to allow NSPS to share the specifictaions for the Augmented Reality Sandbox the company constructed, and was such a great success for NSPS in the exhibit hall booth during the recent American School Counselors Association conference in Boston, MA. The specifications can be found by clicking here.

Thanks to all who have requested the "Get Kids into Survey" posters! NSPS still has a supply of the New York, CSI, and Mining posters and a limited supply of the Smart Cities and Civil posters. While new posters are being created and more content curated, we need YOUR help to make sure we can get the posters into classrooms and continue presenting the message about how Surveyors are involved in many places and tasks. Please consider a donation to "Get Kids into Survey" to help with printing costs to keep the posters FREE! All of the money goes directly into the "Get Kids into Survey" program within NSPS. Help us to keep providing Elaine and Elly's great message to our young future Surveyors!

Last week, two bills were introduced in the U.S. Senate to reform mapping in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) of the Federal Emergency Mapping Agency (FEMA). Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS) introduced S. 2170, a bill empowering local communities to take an active role in flood mapping known as the Municipality Empowerment Mapping Achievement Act. A competing bill, S. 2187, the National Flood Insurance Program Reauthorization and Reform Act of 2019 was introduced by Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ). Section 208 of that bill authorizes funding for Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology for more accurate mapping of flood risk across the country, reducing confusion and generating better data. Last month, a House panel has approved H.R. 3167, the "National Flood Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2019", containing several NSPS-supported geospatial provisions.

NSPS lobbyist John "JB" Byrd recently met with Dr. Greg Murphy (R), a candidate for a U.S. House of Representatives in the 3rd district of North Carolina. This is a vacant seat caused by the passing of Rep. Walter Jones (R) earlier this year. The special election is September 10th. Greg was the valedictorian of Raleigh Broughton High School, a Morehead Scholar finalist and received a Vice Presidential Appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. As a physician, Greg is a business owner, running his own private practice with a payroll of over 50 employees. He is also a member of the faculty of the East Carolina University School of Medicine and a former Chief of Staff of Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. Dr. Murphy was appointed to the State Legislature in Raleigh and has twice been reelected to the State House. He has championed the protection of taxpayer dollars while making sure vital services are met.

Sedimentation surveys in Texas reservoirs help the state understand how water resources will look 50-100 years into the future. It also helps water management organizations such as the Lower Colorado River Authority identify potential issues with sedimentation. A survey crew recently used a multi-frequency depth sounder to collect sedimentation thickness and location data from the lake. The data allows researchers to compare how much sediment has settled on the bottom of the lake since the reservoir's impoundment. In Lake Buchanan, that thickness can vary from nearly 2 meters in the northern part to tens of centimeters in the southern part. The Texas Water Development Board uses this information to determine a reservoir's storage volume and sedimentation level over time. Lake Buchanan’s last hydrographic survey was published in 2006. The board has completed 182 hydrographic surveys on 113 unique reservoirs since the Texas Legislature authorized the surveys in 1991. When possible, the board aims to perform a hydrographic survey on each lake every 10 years or so.

Few technologies of recent years have had quite the impact of electronic mapping and geospatial intelligence. Robert Cardillo has been at the center of it. He retired earlier this year as director of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. He's still involved, though. He joined Federal Drive with Tom Temin to share where he thinks the industry is going.

The fifth-generation mobile network, otherwise known as 5G, will boost interconnectivity and lead to many new technological advances, so it's no surprise that it's the current tech buzzword. A lot of people realize that things will change when the network becomes widespread, but few realize how connected it is to geospatial technology.
