Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors
Surveying New York City's East Side Access, the Country's Biggest and Most Complex Tunnel Project
Professional Surveyor
Control surveys for long tunnels may be the most nerve-wracking job in surveying; tunnel surveyors must work from short baselines and extend control for miles, with no ties to surface monumentation and no possibility of obtaining a GPS or astronomical fix. Because tunnels are narrow, even carefully constructed traverses are based on triangles with long legs of 1,000 feet or more and short legs that are a bit less than tunnel width — maybe 15 to 20 feet.
Lessons in Location Privacy and Twitter
GIS User
Would you post a tweet that read, "I'm going to be at XXX place on 4th Ave. in the corner table at 6:15 PM tonight?" ... I doubt you would; however, contests on Twitter are encouraging people to do exactly that! Privacy and social media seem to be on the minds of many; however, for the most part, nobody really seems to care or really be going to any effort to protect their privacy — perhaps to many it simply isn't a big concern.
Survey on a Quad

Renewable energy — including biomass, geothermal, hydroelectric, wind and solar — is big business in Italy. The country ranks among the world's largest producers of electricity from solar power. The photovoltaic (PV) solar sector has dramatically increased over the past five years, due in part to state incentives. Using PV modules located on the ground or on building facades and roofs, energy produced by the sun can be transformed into electrical energy.

Inside GNSS
Although satellite navigation signals and systems have been designed for more than 40 years, new signals and systems are still being developed. During that time, design concepts have been weighed, implemented or rejected, and improved. Some early concepts — postponed because of impracticality at the time — have been revisited and adopted.
