Daniel Kvall, President NSPS-YSN
NSPS-YSN has had a big year. Elections were held, Bylaws were approved, and now the Young Surveyors Network has officially earned NSPS Affiliate status with a non-voting seat on the Board of Directors. We've come a long way and we're only just getting started!
We are proud to announce the current leaders of NSPS-YSN: President Dan Kvaal (MN); Vice President Christopher Glantz (OR); Secretary Heidi Jackson (WA); and NSPS Delegate Amanda Askren (WA). YSN has grown quickly with 43 states now represented, and only Arkansas, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Nebraska, and South Carolina still looking for leaders.
NSPS-YSN is dedicated to connecting with and providing support for young surveyors nationwide.

The annual experimental geoid models xGEOID16A and xGEOID16B are available online at http://beta.ngs.noaa.gov/GEOID/xGEOID16/.
The geoid is a computed surface that defines zero elevation, and is the basis for measuring precise heights. xGEOID16A is a model that uses all available data and current best methods, excluding GRAV-D airborne gravity data, while xGEOID16B includes GRAV-D airborne gravity data.
Starting in 2014, the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) began publishing a series of experimental geoid (xGEOID) models annually. This latest model is an update to its predecessor, xGEOID15B, and supersedes previous experimental geoid models, since xGEOID16B uses the best available gravity data and improved computation methods.

The 2017 Geospatial Summit will provide updated information about the planned modernization of the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS). Specifically, NGS plans to replace the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83) and the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88) with new datums in year 2022.
The Summit will provide an opportunity for NGS to share updates and discuss the progress of projects related to the NSRS Modernization.
NGS also looks forward to hearing feedback and collecting requirements from its stakeholders from across the federal, public, and private sectors. This event will also help continue discussions from previous Geospatial Summits held in 2010 and 2015.
Additional information about the 2017 Geospatial Summit will be posted online. In the coming months, NGS will update the Webpage with information about the agenda, registration options, and logistics. Send questions or comments via email to NGS.Infocenter@noaa.gov.

Join host Curt Sumner and his guest Glen Thurow for a discussion on the state of surveying education in general and the contemplated cancellation of the New Mexico State University program; the growing push against occupational licensing; the falling numbers of those taking the FS and PS exams.
If you are unable to listen to the show when it is being broadcast, listen to the archive of the show at americaswebradio.com/nsps-radio-hour. Archives for each show are typically available for listening within a few days after the show airs.

Question:
We are doing an ALTA/NSPS 2016 survey. Like many buildings around our city square, the building we are working on has vaults that extend beneath the sidewalk and into the city street. There is nothing in the documents we were provided that addresses these vaults. I am sure you guys have encountered these before. All sorts of info on party walls ... can't find any NYS info on the vaults. Any suggestions?
Response:
Since surveyors would rarely enter a building on a Land Title Survey, and unless you can get any specific helpful information otherwise, I would simply put a note on the survey that says something like "Some buildings in the vicinity of the surveyed property are known to have underground vaults that extend out under the sidewalk into the right of way. It is beyond the scope of an ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey to enter into the building to determine if such a situation exists on the surveyed property."

Inside GNSS
A new report from the Government Accountability Office outlines how, after decades of debate, the Department of Defense system for buying and integrating space systems remains complex and fractured — causing delays, cost overruns, and cancellations among the department's many space programs, including GPS.
The requirements, budgeting and acquisition processes "are largely stove-piped in practice for DoD," wrote GAO.

Point of Beginning
The geospatial community has been relatively quick to adopt unmanned aircraft systems. From September 2014 when the Federal Aviation Administration began awarding exemptions to companies for the use of UAS until Jan. 20, 2016, 3,136 Section 333 exemptions had been approved, according to an AUVSI report. Of those exemptions, aerial photography, aerial inspection and aerial survey were listed in first, third and fourth place in application popularity.

Australia is moving north at the rate of approximately 2.75 inches per year, causing it to be out of sync with GNSS positioning by nearly five feet, reports the BBC. Scientists are working to correct the measurement problems this situation creates.
The shift, caused by normal tectonic movement, is causing a discrepancy that would interfere in the future use of self-driving cars.
