In June 2015 the International Property Measurement Standards Coalition (IPMS) released its second global property measurement standard — International Property Measurement Standard: Residential Buildings — for public comment. IPMS: Residential Buildings is being developed by the Coalition to establish a common, international methodology for measuring residential property. It seeks to address existing inconsistencies in measurement practices between and even within markets, which can lead to confusion for consumers and the inability to compare property on a like-for-like basis. IPMS: Residential Buildings will enhance transparency and consistency in property data. IPMS: Residential Buildings is the second in a suite of International Property Measurement Standards and follows the November 2014 launch of IPMS: Office Buildings. Once published, Coalition organizations have committed to implementing the new standard. Further standards will be created to address industrial, retail and mixed use property.
The Coalition is seeking public comment on its consultation draft, which may be accessed from the website, www.ipmsc.org. Responses should be sent electronically to consultation@ipmsc.org. The consultation will close on Wednesday 30 September 2015.
The IPMSC is a group of more than 60 professional and not-for-profit organisations from around the world working together to develop and implement international standards for measuring property. For more information visit www.ipmsc.org.

At 14, Jacob Heck helped his father with a survey of the family farm. Today, he is nearing the end of his PhD at Ohio State. Jacob’s story between these two milestones in his career has taken him through the Surveying Engineering program at Michigan Tech, summer surveying jobs, projects in South America, and recently being named among the 12 (under the age of 35) NCEES Emerging Engineers and Surveyors.
Join host Curt Sumner for a discussion with Jacob about his experiences and perspectives on surveying.

The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, will hold a hearing on the reauthorization of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) on September 18. The field hearing will be in Billings, Montana at the request of Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT), a member of the panel. The Poplar Pipeline ruptured near Glendive, Montana on January 17, 2015, spilling approximately 30,000 gallons of crude oil into the Yellowstone River. The hearing will examine the federal government’s responsibility in ensuring safe and environmentally sound transportation of products through America’s pipelines, railroads, highways, waterways and airspace. NSPS Lobbyist John "JB" Byrd recently met with Daines' staff in Washington, DC and discussed recommendations of the surveying profession related to location data, positional awareness, as well as inspection efforts connected to underground and underwater utilities. NSPS will assist with legislation calling for greater utilization of location data to prevent loss of life and property, and to help local economies and environmental protection.

NSPS President-Elect Tony Cavell is scheduled to attend and provide remarks in the afternoon of September 16. Other business will include reports by the HSRP working groups on their progress or results in response to NOAA's tasking on coastal intelligence and resilience, and emerging Arctic priorities.

Reliable, consistent positioning accuracy has always driven new product development in the survey and mapping sector of the GPS/GNSS market. It's remarkable how quickly the provided accuracy in successive new survey products over the years has increased the required accuracy from users and customers in the field, and consequently the desired accuracy in a feedback loop to the product developers.

Balancing protection of the environment and the needs of a particular community is kind of like a game. Each decision affects one, the other, or both, and opens up a new set of alternatives. The answers are not always right or wrong. but instead are subjective. The more innovative the answer, the more likely it is that issues will actually be resolved. When a gamer solves a problem in an innovative and imaginative way, they call it an "epic win."
