Workforce Development Initiative
On July 27, 2015, the Oklahoma Society of Land Surveyors (OSLS) and The State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (State Board) held a preliminary meeting to discuss the formation of a Task Force between the two groups with the purpose to promote the profession of Land Surveying in Oklahoma. The first official meeting of that Task force was held on September 18, 2015. At that meeting the objectives and goals of the Task Force were adopted.

Senate and House conferees have begun meeting to reconcile S. 2012, the Energy Policy Modernization Act of 2016. Included in the bill is a modified version of the NSPS-supported Federal Land Asset Inventory Reform (FLAIR) Act and a provision on the collection of energy-related "data gathered by geomatics techniques, including tools and techniques used in land surveying, remote sensing, cartography, geographic information systems, global navigation satellite systems, photogrammetry, geophysics, geography, or other remote means."

The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure has received testimony in a hearing on maritime navigation, with witnesses from NOAA and USACE. NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey has nearly completed the transition to a new charting system that uses one central database to produce all NOAA chart products.

On September 15, the Senate passed the Water Resources Development Act, or WRDA (S. 2848), by a vote of 95-3. The House version of WRDA (H.R. 5303) is expected to be considered soon.

The Senate Banking Committee held a hearing to review the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and the recommendations from the Technical Mapping Advisory Council (TMAC)’s 2015 Annual Report. NSPS is represented on the TMAC by Wendy Lathrop.

Back again in Portland, Oregon, the 2016 Institute of Navigation's ION GNSS+ conference was a great opportunity for the GNSS community to catch up on what's been cooking in the industry, and of course who's been doing what in the research community.
The attendees eagerly took to a wide range of technical paper presentation sessions, and from time to time came to take a look at what industry had to offer on the exhibit floor.

Last month I interviewed Guy Buesnel, a security technologist for Spirent Communications, about the threat of GPS spoofing created by the desire of Pokémon GO players to cheat the game. GPS spoofing is the ability to fake or spoof your location. In other words, your GPS receiver reports a false location rather that the actual position. It works because the spoofing equipment generates a stronger signal than the GPS background signal.
