The Natural Resources Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives last week approved 16 bills at a two-hour markup. One of the bills was H.R. 2189, the Digital Coast Act. By action taken during the markup, the Subcommittee on Water, Oceans, and Wildlife discharged from further consideration of H.R. 2189 by unanimous consent. An amendment offered by Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), Chairman of the committee, was agreed to by unanimous consent. H.R. 2189, as amended, was adopted and ordered favorably reported to the House of Representatives by unanimous consent. A news release by the bill’s lead sponsor, Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD), notes the bill allows NOAA to lead a comprehensive mapping process for the nation’s shorelines. Coastal communities will be able to use the data to prepare for storms, manage floods, restore ecosystems and plan smarter developments near America’s coasts, harbors, ports and shorelines with the surveying, mapping and other data collected in the program. NSPS is a leading advocate of the bill.

What if a picture really could be worth a thousand insights?
Digital data is the foundation upon which organizations today base the bulk of their major decisions. More and more, the line between business success and business failure seems to be at the point where a company goes from merely having data to being able to organize it and make sense of it.

Over the last few months, I've just had to get my hands dirty again with Mapbox. For those who don't know what Mapbox is, let me introduce it.
Mapbox is a platform for location-based data. It allows you to host your data with them so that you can stream it into your web maps, and it provides a Mapbox webGL so that you can host your maps using their code for free. The only cost is when you are using their hosting service; you pay a subscription that enables them to pay for their servers and their team, who create the awesomeness.

State Scoop
It's been more than 25 years since the National Spatial Data Infrastructure became an official initiative of federal, state and local government — but the vision of a common place to share geospatial data remains unrealized.
"The reality is we don't have a shared vision of the NSDI," Cy Smith, geospatial information officer for Oregon says on the latest episode of GIS Addressed.

When a Cessna fixed-wing aircraft took off over an Austrian alpine region on an early morning in August 2016, it ascended carrying two crew, a large format digital camera, a bit of uncertainty and a whole lot of risk.
The plane's mission was part of a project to provide a precise, as-built survey of a narrow 40-kilometer (24-mile) stretch of railway in the Lower Inn Valley east of Innsbruck.
