Thanks to the 600 NSPS members who have already responded to our questionnaire about whether NSPS should hold a national conference, and if so when/where/content/etc. We are hopeful that more members are willing to share their perspective, including what would attract them to attend a national conference sponsored by NSPS, and perhaps co-sponsored with another organization as has been done for the past two years with MAPPS. In order to continue to provide that opportunity, we are leaving this link open until Oct. 14. Please take five minutes to respond to a few questions, and assist NSPS in gauging interest.

The way residential property is measured can vary significantly from one market to the next, meaning owners, occupiers and investors in domestic property are often left confused or misinformed when it comes to the reported floor space. This causes substantial issues when property is listed off-plan or bought by investors and can also lead to disputes where rental calculations and service charges have relied on erroneous measurement information.
IPMS: Residential Buildings combats this by providing a uniform global method to determine the size and dimension of floor space measures that can be used anywhere in the world.

For several years, Rick Pryce and the Florida Surveying and Mapping Society have kept excellent records of equipment theft in the state and have reached out to others for information. Following that example, NSPS some time ago created a stolen equipment registry on its website.
The most recent addition to the registry is a notification from a Maryland firm of a recent theft of equipment stored in Horsham, PA.

In support of education in surveying, the National Society of Professional Surveyors and Schonstedt Instrument Company have launched an initiative to put magnetic locators in the hands of surveying students nationwide.
NSPS is seeking donations of Schonstedt magnetic locators (shipped FREE to Schonstedt), to be refurbished to "like-new" condition and distributed to NSPS-recognized surveyor education programs throughout the country.

A recent Congressional Research Service report stated the advantages of an infrastructure bank might include the leveraging of state, local, and private-sector investment and data-driven project selection. Proponents of a national infrastructure bank typically see it as a way to provide low-cost, long-term loans, loan guarantees, and lines of credit on flexible terms to support infrastructure projects.

A Government Accountability Office report found that significant challenges persist in managing real property in general and excess and underutilized property in particular, including a lack of reliable data with which to measure the extent of the problem. GAO has recommended assessing the reliability of data collected and entered into GSA's Federal Real Property Profile database by individual federal agencies. NSPS supports the Federal Land Asset Inventory Reform (FLAIR) Act, to provide a current, accurate cadastre of federally owned land and buildings.

The American Surveyor
By J. Anthony Cavell, PS: Recent years have been exciting for NSPS and for surveying and mapping. In my own roles as a plebeian, a professional, a member of local, state, and national organizations, and officer of same, I've seen what has the appearance of big changes in the practice of surveying. As a speaker, consultant, and instructor, I've seen and explained how little the practice of surveying has changed over time. What a dichotomy!

Reasonable Expectations of Privacy and a discussion of privacy in the United States typically begins with the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which provides that "[t]he right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated." In U.S. v. Katz, the U.S. Supreme Court found that this Fourth Amendment protection created an individual's constitutional right to privacy.

Instead of fielding its own systems, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency is developing a "credit card swipe" approach to adding commercially gathered, unclassified intelligence to its data, according to NGA Director Robert Cardillo.
With the rise of commercial satellite imagery providers such as Google's Terra Bella, Planet Labs and BlackSky, NGA is developing new acquisition methods to make its operations more cost-effective and efficient, Cardillo said.

In units of time, we're not far removed from the world of paper and ink. But if we measure the distance using terms of productivity, flexibility and value, today's geospatial business environment is light-years away from its former location.
We regard electronic data and communications as an essential for modern business. But these technologies are still young and growing.

Mistakes and blunders are an inevitable part of being human. In fact, a wise person once told me that the only people who don't make mistakes are those who don't do anything.
Because a least squares adjustment of a plane survey is nonlinear, it will not arrive at a solution if a large blunder, such as a misidentified station, is present in the data.
