On Nov. 3, the BLM is planning on a retracement of the controlling survey lines. Q: I just graduated college and have started a job in real estate appraisal. To assist in understanding land title surveys, do you have a standard map legend? There are some symbols on ALTA surveys that I do not understand, and there does not seem to be a legend online. Thank you for the help.
A: Actually, there is no standard legend because there is not a consensus across the country as to which symbols necessarily represent which features.
There is, however, a requirement in the ALTA/NSPS (and in the previous ALTA/ACSM) Standards that requires the surveyor to provide a legend of symbols on the face of the survey. So, if you are inclined to prod/provoke the surveyor, you could call and tell them that according to the standards, they need a legend on their survey. Alternately, you could just call and ask them what certain symbols mean and ask if they could provide you with a legend.

The Louisville/Jefferson County Information Consortium (LOJIC) represents a multi-agency effort to build and maintain a comprehensive GIS to serve all of Louisville Metro and Jefferson County, Kentucky. Present LOJIC participants include the Louisville Metro Government, Louisville and Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD), the Property Valuation Administrator (PVA), and the Louisville Water Company. Curt Bynum, GISP, is the Manager of LOJIC. He will join host Curt Sumner to discuss the system, including how data from surveyors is utilized.

Think a gridlocked Congress is accomplishing nothing? NSPS members at the fall conference in Chandler, Arizona, heard that the society has been successful in making strides on a number of important issues at the Federal level. NSPS Joint Government Affairs Committee (JGAC) Chair Pat Smith presided over a committee meeting NSPS lobbyist John "JB" Byrd and presented a legislative and regulatory update to the Board of Directors.

NSPS lobbyist John "JB" Byrd attended the recent meeting of the National Geospatial Advisory Committee (NGAC) held in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. It was the final meeting for Gary Thompson of North Carolina in his six-year tenure as an NSPS-supported member of NGAC. The meeting featured discussions and updates on working with the Presidential Transition Team after the Nov. 8 election, the 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) in USGS, the National Parcel Data Summit, and the National Address Database.

The NSPS government affairs team is already hard at work preparing for a new Congress that will convene in Washington, DC in January. NSPS lobbyist John "JB" Byrd recently met with Brian Mast (R), a candidate for Congress from Florida's 18th District, an open seat currently held by Congressman Patrick Murphy (D), who is running for the U.S. Senate. While stationed in Iraq serving his country under the elite Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) as a bomb disposal expert, an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion resulted in the loss of both of Mast's legs. He has been awarded medals for valor, merit and sacrifice, to include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal for Valor, Purple Heart and Defense Meritorious Service Medal. Upon retiring from the Army, Mast continued to work in counter terrorism and national defense as an Explosive Specialist under DHS with the next objective being the general election on Nov. 8.

Point of Beginning
Many long-time geographic information systems users, whether government or private entities, have very robust internal GIS resources. Organizations like these, with professionals and technology capable of implementing complex geospatial applications, tend to handle GIS related projects on their own.
In some cases though, they may come across a GIS-related project that calls for expertise in aspects of the technology they aren't so strong in.

Unmanned technologies have created big opportunities, and the FAA's Rule 107 has unleashed them (to a high degree, arguably). Investors are paying attention. Just this summer we learned that Kespry has closed a $16 million venture capital round, Autodesk has invested an unspecified amount in 3DR, and DroneDeploy has raised $20 million of funding. According to published reports, the U.S. market for UAS in the next five years alone will be worth, conservatively, billions of dollars.

Emerging high-volume markets call for RTK technologies previously limited to niche markets by complexity and cost. This article discusses design and implementation of a very precise RTK-based module solution while maintaining cost, size and power consumption as low as possible. Several tests under a range of signal environments benchmark the new module's performance against existing L1 RTK products.
