Lobbyist John "JB" Byrd of NSPS's federal government affairs consulting firm, John M. Palatiello & Associates, Inc., met yesterday in the U.S. Capitol with Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), the House Majority Whip. The meeting was a follow-up to JB being awarded the Most Valuable Player award from the Lobbyists versus Members of Congress charity basketball game last month. The "Heart of a Warrior Steve Scalise Award" is named in honor of Scalise, who was injured in the Congressional baseball practice shooting in June. Rep. Scalise continues rehabilitation, and plans to play in next year's charity basketball game. JB told Rep. Scalise he was honored to win the award and that the Majority Whip serves as an inspiration for all involved in the effort and beyond.

This Friday, October 27, a House Subcommittee will hold a roundtable policy discussion at the Port of Miami to launch the development of new legislation to improve the country’s ports, locks and dams, inland waterways, and other water resources infrastructure. The Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) is legislation that authorizes the Corps of Engineers to carry out navigation, flood control, shoreline protection, hydropower, dam safety, water supply, and environmental restoration activities nationwide. This infrastructure is critical to the Nation’s competitiveness and is directly tied to job creation and economic development. A live webcast will also be available.

A broad coalition of taxpayer rights organizations urged the Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta to repeal All Agency Memorandum 212 (AAM-212), the March 2013 Obama Administration rule that extended the definition of "laborers and mechanics" to members of survey crews under the prevailing wage Davis-Bacon Act. NSPS has been pushing for repeal of AAM-212 since it was implemented. That change was done without a public comment period, as part of any legislative action and without consultation with the professional surveying community, those impacted by the regulation. NSPS will meet with Department of Labor officials next week to renew its request for repeal. The taxpayer group letter called AAM-212 a "costly and unnecessary change" that should be repealed under President Trump's program, "Reducing Regulation and Controlling Regulatory Costs," in which agencies must eliminate two regulations for each new rule it promulgates.

By Wendy Lathrop, The American Surveyor
Hurricane season will be winding down over the next month, but the recovery phase will stretch on for years to come. Harvey, Irma and Maria rank right up there with the costliest and largest storms in American history. On the nuts and bolts side of the equation, there is a lot of work waiting in the wings for surveyors. There are roads to clear and reconstruct, utilities to get back into working order, buildings to demolish and buildings to repair or erect.

Geospatial World
Mapping and the art of storytelling both date back to antiquity. Cartographers have illuminated us, expanded our horizons, helped in better understanding of our world and enabled us to go far and beyond, giving wings to the imagination of an explorer. And, in the same tenor, raconteurs, masters of fables and troubadours have enchanted generations.

"The Arctic, before we started, was one of the most poorly mapped places on Earth. It's not anymore," said Paul Morin, co–principal investigator of the ArcticDEM initiative, which has now released high-resolution digital elevation models of 97.4% of the region. With this latest release, "we have a uniform product at 2-meter [resolution]" for all the land area north of 60°N latitude, plus those parts of Alaska, Greenland, and Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula that are south of that point.

In a recently published book called "Skill Up: A Software Developer Guide to Life and Career," author Jordan Hudgens distinguishes five types of software developers. This makes it easier for developers to narrow their focus on what type of developer they want to be in coming years.
Now let's continue this line of thought with regards to geospatial developers, meaning developers with a geospatial background.
