National Geodetic Survey
Flood mapping depends on vertical accuracy — but what happens when there is ambiguity about the vertical reference datum itself, or when a static vertical datum is used that does not appropriately convey flood risk in a subsiding area?
To alleviate these issues, the National Geodetic Survey is improving the Nation's height system by replacing the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) with North American-Pacific Geopotential Datum of 2022 (NAPGD2022). This webinar introduces NAPGD2022 and illustrates how it will enhance flood mapping activities. Case studies from different parts of the United States illustrate the challenges and importance of capturing critical metadata associated with every topographic measurement, Base Flood Elevation, and water level.
