NSPS
The election of the NSPS President-Elect, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Director-at-Large will begin on December 1 and end on December 21, 2016. It will again be conducted electronically. Members will use an email message they receive from the electronic voting service to access information about candidates, and then vote.
NSPS members for whom NSPS has no email address will receive the ballot via the postal service at the address currently contained in the NSPS member database.
If you do not receive a ballot via email please contact Trish (trisha.milburn@nsps.us.com) for your voter ID and link to vote.
Also on the ballot is a proposed Bylaws amendment regarding the terms of office for NSPS officers. Specifically, the amendment would, in future elections, result in a four-year commitment as an officer, beginning as Vice President and ending after a term as Immediate Past President. The result would be that once elected Vice President, one would automatically accede through the offices of President-Elect, President, and Immediate Past President.
Due to unforeseen circumstances related to health, one of the original four (4) candidates for Vice President in this election is not able to continue to compete for that office. Accordingly, there will now be only three (3) Vice Presidential candidates. The electronic ballot will not only include biographical information for all candidates, but will also include for the Vice Presidential candidates their respective responses to three specific questions posed to them. Prior to the election, information about the candidates can be viewed on the NSPS website.
Note that the candidates running for President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, and Director-at-Large are running unopposed; however, members are allowed to vote for "write-in" candidates.

In a major legislative victory for NSPS, two significant legislative priorities in Congress are closer to becoming law following action this week in the U.S. Senate. On Monday, the Digital Coast Act of 2015, S. 2325, passed the Senate by Unanimous Consent. Also on Monday, the Hydrographic Services Improvements Act (HSIA) which is Section 301 of S. 2206 was placed on the Senate Legislative Calendar under General Orders, setting up full Senate action in the coming days. The next step for the Digital Coast bill in the U.S. House of Representatives includes the possibility of passing the bill under “suspension”, a process reserved for non-controversial legislation, prior to sending to the White House for the Presidential signature. Both bills were championed by NSPS members during "Lobby Day" in Congress in earlier this Congress.

The American Surveyor
In certain areas of the country, the surveyors who were finding the original GLO monuments while retracing the government-established section lines had difficulty understanding why many lines were crooked. Other lines between the monuments had unusually long and short half miles. During their retracement, measuring on line and an equal distance between section corners would not always guarantee that the needed quarter corner would be found.

You know those moments where you are sitting in a pub, the office, or at a friend's house and you say something, then suddenly wonder why you haven't thought of it before? I had that very issue in the Brew Dog pub near Spitalfields in London, UK, a couple of weeks ago. You see, I was discussing the use of web mapping in 3D and writing a specification for the data being hosted, and then it came out. ...

"Now that we can rely on the powerful Ariane 5, we can anticipate the quicker completion of Galileo deployment, permitting the system to enter full operation," said Paul Verhoef, ESA's Director for the Galileo Program and Navigation-related Activities, following the successful launch Nov. 17 of four satellites at once.
Said Verhoef: "The European Union is set to declare Galileo operational for initial services at the end of this year, bringing the system to the point where it can start serving users."
